When others often only see the disability, I see more than that.  These individuals should not be identified by their mental illness, and physical or learning disabilities.  Most of these students are the hardest working and some have the biggest heart.  Starting in middle school, I often acted as an a “buddy”.  I became a friend and leader in class and in extracurricular activities outside school when others seemed to disregard students that were different from them.  In 2011, this became more personal.  My brother, 7, was diagnosed with a language-based learning disability that affected his reading comprehension, writing skills, and information retention.  He was held back a year and often left out of groups because he was learning slower than others.  
That year, his testing led to an IEP or Individualized Education Program that altered his weekly schedule to allow further development in areas that were more difficult.  He was pulled away from classes at specific times with other students who were experiencing the same difficulties; special education teachers would demonstrate the phonetics of words to build reading skill, ask questions to grasp read context and strategies to write clearer.  From the time he received his IEP up to eighth grade or the end of middle school, learning became easier, but each time he was pulled away it often distanced him from collaboration that would be experienced in the general classroom.  

Today, my brother is enrolled as a high school sophomore at a technical school.  He is happy.  He is studying mechanics and exceling in all of his academic classes.  Before the pandemic, he would say “I want to go to school” or “I love school” and unfortunately since then he has not been able to step back into the building.  The shift in his learning environment revealed that everyone belongs somewhere.  Whether its in the auto-body shop or in a science lab, architecture can inspire.  

The relationships between mediums from the past and mediums of the present emerge for the same reason. Soul turns to functionality. Interstitial of painting, interstitial of urban, there is no difference, as each creates spatial relationships. Awakening the inactivated brings renewed experience. Entangling of space, layering of strokes, movement between these creates rich experience. You cannot tell foreground from background, layers entangle themselves. Picturing Pollock as an urban designer rather than a surface designer, forgotten spaces in the urban realm, would not be. Another must interpret and translate what has been made.  

Drawing to dancing to painting my interest is widespread within artistic mediums. Participating in an artistic based class schedule in my formative years created a focused knowledge. Senior art study would end with a mural left in the halls of the school, along with a gallery opening providing work on display.

Being only part of my canvas, artistic mediums are not alone. Athletics become the connector between mediums. Looking past the canvas. There is always a need for others. Too much of a singular creates routine and lacks tension. Tension emanates possibility and varied experience. Having spent my childhood years streets away from Providence and my recent years in the heart of Boston, there is a sense of familiarity walking into a city. The character of each bare a resemblance. Though thresholds change, their forgotten space does not.

The interstitial of the city rests in its inactivated spaces, alleys. The uninviting experience is a deterrent. As a deterrent there is hesitation for use. The vicious circle must be broken. The Space is untried. What happens to the forgotten space once it becomes entangled with experience? Perhaps it becomes primary rather than secondary. The goal simply is for the inactivated to become activated, personality to combine with function. Bring attention to the interstitial. Eschew the rifts.
