When we discussed about the basics like matter and the introduction to chemistry. Now, diving deeper into Inorganic Chemistry, I see how it trains my analytical thinking and prepares me to handle reagents, interpret chemical reactions, and understanding instruments used in clinical tests. Organic chemistry, on the other hand, opens my eye to the complexity of biomolecules. Learning both fields cultivates a sense of curiosity, responsibility, and discipline.

Concept Summaries:

In our discussion, we learned that chemistry is the study of matter, and matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. We gave examples like water, steam, and ice. Our professor also asked us to give our own examples — we said things like a cellphone and a pencil. We also talked about things that are not matter, like sound and heat, since they don’t have mass or take up space.

We also discussed the five branches of chemistry — organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and biochemistry. Each one has a different focus but is still connected. Then, we learned the difference between science and technology. Science is about gaining knowledge, while technology is using that knowledge to help people. Lastly, we talked about pure and applied chemistry. Pure chemistry is just for understanding, and applied chemistry is used to solve problems, like in medicine or farming.

Question: How does learning Inorganic and Organic Chemistry help you become a better Medical Technologist?

Learning inorganic and organic chemistry is really helpful in becoming a better Medical Technologist because it helps us understand what’s inside the body. Inorganic chemistry helps us learn about things like salts and minerals in our blood, while organic chemistry teaches us about carbon-based compounds like proteins and fats. These are important because we deal with them in lab tests and results. Knowing how these substances work can help us understand what’s normal or not in a patient’s body, and that helps doctors give the right treatment.

Being a freshman can be scary. It's scary, as we are starting fresh after high school, and it's scary, as we don't fully know what to expect in every lesson and subject. Today, the fear was still there, however, when the class started, the scary feeling wore off. Ms. Ko, being our professor, is a big help. She was able to explain chemistry so well that I didn't have questions after the first lesson. For our first lesson, we were taught about the 5 branches of chemistry: inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry. Learning those basic facts about chemistry already felt like a big step in being a good medical technologist. I believe that we always start somewhere, and here is where I start my journey. As an aspiring MedTech, learning inorganic chemistry can help me become a better MedTech. It can help me interpret lab results accurately and understand how medical devices are used. While learning organic chemistry helps me with having a better understanding of biomolecules, which plays a big part, as it teaches us about proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. Having a solid foundation in both branches of chemistry can help me become a better medical technologist.

From what i know Inorganic chemistry deals with non-carbon-based compounds metals, salts, acids, and bases. Understanding these will help us identify how these chemicals interacts for better analysis. As for Organic Chemistry, it focuses on carbon-based compounds, including biomolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids). By knowing this, it will help us understand how the body work as the body has a lot of carbon. This is key knowledge in laboratory works.
