Applying Sunscreen

With a primary educator (an educator the child has made close connection with and trusts as they have built an attachment with them) will encourage the child to apply sunscreen themselves with the educators support and supervision, while using a mirror. A discussion can be had as to why the educator wants and needs the child to wear sunscreen and why the child needs to wear sunscreen (safety), this allow the educator and child to be attuned. It is through discussion when the educator can express empathy and sensitivity with the child if they do not want sunscreen. Eg. "I know you don't like the feeling of sunscreen on your skin, I don't like it either, but it's really important that we put it on because...".

Melinda

Hand washing

Having good hygiene management such as hand washing helps promote children's health and sense of safety when incorporated into predictable routines where children feel educators will respond sensitively to them should they need assistance with pulling up their sleeves, getting soap out of the dispenser and drying their hands. Educators can promote attachment to the children by getting to know the children and being able to decipher how to respond appropriately to the child. In the case of hand washing , this may mean that they allow children opportunities do it independently under supervision and therefore promote their self esteem or by scaffolding their learning by helping them when they recognize the cue that the child is experiencing difficulty.
Pauline

Arrival time

Arrival time can be challenging for young children when they have to leave their primary caregiver/s. Educators can use a number of strategies to ease this transition and help children deal with separation anxiety. The teacher and the parent can develop a goodbye ritual, for example, they can both give a high five or quick hug or sing a goodbye song "this is the way we say goodbye, say goodbye, say goodbye.." By doing this, both educator and parent are showing that they empathise with the child and understand their emotions at this difficult time, however the child is made aware that the educator is there to step in and become the 'temporary caregiver'. This will help to develop trust between educator and child as they build a secure and stable relationship.

Rebecca D

Nappy changing

Supporting children's health and safety by ensuring nappy change practices are hygienic is an important aspect of high quality child care. Educators are to develop positive nappy changing experiences, which is possible when a child develops attachment to them. It is a significant part of a child's daily routine and hygiene which means an educators responsibility is to promote a strong and trusting relationship to encourage this routine. Allowing each child to feel relaxed and active participants in the process and encouraging them to help where age appropriate, ie: gathering the nappies or washing hands.

Kirsty-Lee
