A Day in My Life at SMKBB

Stepping into the school each morning, I am greeted by the lively energy of students and the camaraderie of the teaching staff. As a practicum teacher, my day is filled with planning lessons, teaching, and reflecting on how to make learning both engaging and effective for my students.

Lessons Beyond the Classroom

Teaching at SMKBB has been an eye-opening experience. I’ve learned that teaching is as much about connecting with students as it is about delivering content. It’s about understanding their strengths, encouraging their efforts, and adapting when something doesn’t quite work out.

Challenges and Triumphs

Admittedly, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Managing a classroom and ensuring every student is engaged can be challenging. However, seeing students grasp a concept or confidently express themselves in English makes it all worthwhile.

SMK Bandar Banting (SMKBB) is a vibrant secondary school located in the heart of Banting, Selangor. Known for its diverse and lively community, SMKBB is home to students from various backgrounds, creating a rich and dynamic environment for learning and growth.

The school is equipped with facilities that support both academic and extracurricular activities, encouraging students to excel in their studies while also nurturing talents in sports, arts, and leadership. The dedicated teachers and staff work tirelessly to ensure students receive a holistic education, preparing them for their future endeavors.

Whether it’s through its academic programs or the variety of co-curricular activities offered, SMKBB stands as a place where students can thrive and create lasting memories. It’s more than just a school—it’s a community that inspires success.

With graduation just around the corner, I feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia. This practicum has affirmed my passion for teaching and my commitment to making a difference in my future students’ lives.

Getting to know the teachers was a highlight of the day. We had an ice-breaking session where I learned about their experiences and tips for handling students. I received my teaching timetable the next day, with 1 Budi and 1 Isitqamah as my assigned classes. Unfortunately, my mentor, Teacher Lojahna, was not available this week, so I haven’t had the chance to meet her yet.

To help me adapt, Cikgu Rosli assigned me relief periods for all of Teacher Lojahna’s classes. It was nerve-wracking stepping into a new environment, but I managed to pull through. For 1 Budi’s ice-breaking session, we played games, which helped ease my nerves and build rapport with the students.

The teachers' friendliness made this transition smoother and more enjoyable. I’m nervous but optimistic about my journey ahead. I hope to grow into a competent teacher and leave a positive impact on my students.

I received my timetable early in the week, and soon after, I officially began teaching. Nerves hit me hard, but I reminded myself that this is all part of the learning process. Teacher Lojahna joined me for my first class to help with classroom control and observe my teaching style. Having her there was reassuring, and I learned so much just from the way she handled the students.

Later in the week, I had the chance to observe Teacher Lojahna in her element during her classes. Watching her interact with the students and manage the classroom was eye-opening. She has such a natural way of balancing discipline with encouragement, and I hope to mirror that in my own teaching.

I also conducted an ice-breaking session with my another class, 1 Istiqamah which helped break down initial barriers. For this week’s lesson, I introduced Unit 3 to the class and guided the students through the topic. It felt good to finally get into the syllabus and start engaging with the material. In addition to my regular classes, I was given relief periods to cover for other teachers, giving me even more time to interact with students.

One class grasped the material quickly, allowing me to progress smoothly through the activities and even add extra practice exercises. The other class, however, required a slower, more guided approach with simpler examples and additional reinforcement. This contrast opened my eyes to the importance of adapting to the pace and learning styles of different groups. It’s not just about delivering the content—it’s about ensuring that each student, regardless of their level, walks away with a better understanding.

I initially felt nervous about adjusting my approach on the spot, but seeing how small changes in explanation and examples helped the students in the lower-proficiency class made me feel more confident in my ability to modify lessons in real-time. It was a challenge, but also a rewarding experience that made me appreciate the diversity of learners in the classroom.

A standout moment this week was receiving positive feedback from my mentor on my teaching notes. After observing my lessons and going through the materials I had prepared, she complimented my attention to detail and the structured way I approached the lesson plan. Knowing that my preparation and effort were recognized gave me a huge confidence boost. It reassured me that I’m on the right track, even when I feel uncertain at times.

Her feedback also made me realize how crucial lesson planning is—not just for the sake of the students, but for my own clarity and confidence in delivering lessons. Having well-organized notes helped me stay on course, even when the class dynamic shifted or unexpected questions arose.

After that, I introduced dialogue writing, where they crafted simple exchanges that reflected real-life situations. The highlight of the lesson was the telephone roleplay. Students paired up, and each team performed their dialogues in front of the class, simulating a phone call. It was a fun and interactive way to get them speaking, and most of them really enjoyed the activity.

However, the two classes responded very differently to the lesson. One class was highly engaged and stayed focused throughout, participating enthusiastically in both the writing and speaking portions. Group work flowed smoothly, and the roleplay sessions were filled with laughter and creativity.

In contrast, the other class posed more of a challenge. While they were excited at first, maintaining their focus during the group activity was difficult. The moment I allowed them to work together, the noise level skyrocketed, and many students got distracted by side conversations rather than focusing on the task. I had to pause several times to regain control of the class, which disrupted the flow of the lesson.

Reflecting on this, I realized that classroom management during group work is something I need to improve, especially when dealing with classes that have stronger peer bonds and a tendency to over-socialize. It’s clear that different strategies are required for different groups, and I’ll need to plan more structured activities moving forward to avoid losing their attention.

Despite explaining the importance of presentations, some students were reluctant to step forward. In contrast, the other class was more confident, and many groups were eager to share their ideas without hesitation.

I realize now that presentation skills might be an area I need to work on more with this particular class. Some students seem to lack confidence in speaking publicly, and I plan to introduce smaller, low-stakes presentation exercises to gradually build their confidence. It’s a reminder that developing these skills takes time and patience, but I’m committed to helping them get there.

Even though it was a busy week, I found ways to tie the excitement into my lessons. For instance, during the email writing activity, I asked some students to draft an email invitation for Sports Day, while others wrote thank-you emails to teachers and staff for organizing the event. This helped them see how email writing can apply to real-life situations.

Despite the distraction of Sports Day preparations, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the students focused during our email writing lessons. I could see their confidence growing as they practiced different email formats.

However, one challenge I faced was keeping their attention during the more technical parts of the lesson. The excitement of Sports Day sometimes overshadowed the classroom, and I had to work harder to maintain their focus. Breaking the lesson into smaller chunks and incorporating interactive examples helped manage this.
