Hereditary breast cancer is caused by a mutant gene passed from a parent to their children and is rare. This type of breast cancer ranges from 5 to 10 percent and around 27 percent for all breast cancer. Hereditary breast cancer usually develops earlier in life than other types.

The Mutation That Causes This Disorder

The first cause that was found for breast cancer was associated with BRCA1 on the 17th chromosome and around a year later BRCA2 was discovered on chromosome 13. When someone carries a mutated form of either BRCA1 or BRCA2, they have a greater risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer at some point. Children of parents with a BRCA2 or BRCA1 mutation have a 50 percent of inheriting that gene mutation too. Research in 1995 and 1996 concluded that Ashkenazi Jews are 10 times more likely to have mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA genes than the rest of the population. They are a little of 13 times more likely to have this mutation than the rest of the population. They learned from their research that 3 specific mutations in their genes made up 90 percent of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants within this religious group. But, only seven percent of breast cancers in this group of women are caused by alterations in BRCA1 and BRCA2. Not all hereditary breast cancers are caused by BRCA1 and BRCA2 and researchers have discovered that at least half of heredity is not linked with these genes. They believe that the remaining cases of heredity are not one gene but many genes that are making up little parts of the breast cancers.
