Chief Joseph was a Native-American Chief. He is considered a rebel because he led his band of fellow Natives to seek refuge after being drove off of their plot by white settlers. They were forcibly removed and had to live on their very reduced stretch of land in Idaho. There was a series of encounters with white settlers in 1877 which led to Joseph and some of the Nez Perce which is his Tribe to leave. They sought refuge with the Lakota people in Canada. This resulted in a 1,170 mile long fighting retreat as they were pursued by the U.S. Army. After being cornered and having no place else to go, Chief Joseph and the surviving Nez Perce surrendered and were sent to live on the stretch of land in Idaho they had fled from only months prior. Chief Joseph stayed there until he passed away in 1904.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Joseph

-David Williams
