A major conflict in the book is that Jem and Spider stole a couple of cars and money to run away from home. While this is going on the police are searching for the both of them because they are suspected to be involved with why the London Eye blew up. This is because just before the London Eye blew up Jem grabbed Spider and they ran from the London Eye. Jem kept reading people's numbers and they all said the same date. Which was the day the London Eye blew up. Since everyone had the same number Jem knew something bad was going to happen. Which is why Jem and Spider ran from the London Eye. They are also known for stealing cars and money. So Jem and Spider struggle to survive while the police are searching for them. While this is happening Jem knows that Spider only has a few more days to live.

I believe that the Antagonist in the book is Jem's good friend Spider. Even though they're very good friends I still believe he's the antagonist. Spider is the one that brought Jem into all the trouble with the stealing of the cars and money. Because of Spider Jem has to run from the police and struggle for survival.

Example from the text:
"Spider looked at me over the top of his nan's head, and I knew what he was thinking. We couldn't stick around waiting to be picked up. It was time to run."

Theme

I believe that the theme in the book Num8ers is to not tell people everything. Even though it might seem like a good idea to tell someone something, it could turn out bad in the end. I think this because it might seem like a good idea for Jem to tell Spider the day he will die, so Spider could look out for that day and be careful. But in the end it might not be a good idea because Spider will be counting down the days he will die. He will be scared and nervous for that day to come.

Examples from text:
" "You know mine, then," he said quietly. I didn't say anything. "You know mine," he said, more insistently. "
"... "I dunno if I want to know or not." He sank down to the ground, crouching, holding his head."
"Don't ask me, I thought. Never ask me that Spider. "I won't tell you," I said quickly. "I couldn't. It's not right. I'll never tell no one." "
" "It would do your head in if I told you, freak you out. It's just not right." "
" "... Each day, one step closer. No way, man. No one should have to live with that."

A major conflict that affects Jem's everyday life is that Jem can see the day that someone will die. When Jem looks at people the first thing that she notices is the person's number. This might not seem like a problem but I believe that it has affected Jem in more bad ways than good. Yes this can be a good thing so she can help keep her closest friends and family members safe and help keep them safe. But imagine knowing the day one of your loved ones are going to die. I could never stand counting down the days of someone dying and knowing the exact day when it will happen. It must drive Jem insane. Especially counting down the days of her friend Spider going to die.

Speech:
Important Quote: "Where I don't have to look at anyone, where I don't have to see their numbers."

What this says about the character: When Jem sees someone, the first thing she notices is the number on their forehead. That number is the date of when that person will die.

Thoughts:
What is the character thinking? Throughout the book I believe that Jem is thinking how to prevent her good friend Spider from dying.

What do you learn about the character? That she dislikes seeing her closest friends die. She's also very smart and thinks about the consequences before she acts.

Effect On Others:
How do the people around the main character feel about them? I think that Spider feels very comfortable and has a good relationship with Jem.

How do you know? I know this because Jem and Spider have been friends for a very long time and they know a lot about each other.

Actions:
What things does the main character do that can reveal more about them? I feel that Jem is a very private person and keeps many things to herself. She is not an open person. Only Spider knows a lot about her. That's because they grew up together and Jem trusts Spider.

Looks:
Jem used to have long brown hair. Then just before her and Spider ran away she decided to cut it. Jem is a short girl.
