Family Independence Programs

Children's Programs

Homelessness among children is a significant issue as children are particularly vulnerable and represent the future of our community. Almost 60% of the residents served by United Way Greater Toronto are children. The organization provides a safe environment for these children, offering stability and support during critical developmental years.

After-School Evening Programs

This program, which consists of arts and crafts, vacations, library visits and excursions to nearby parks, is intended to help kids with their homework and offer extra assistance. 

Teen Programs

These programs provide activities and schoolwork help to teenagers who are enduring difficult circumstances, such as abuse or homelessness. Teens are offered workshops and seminars to assist them better comprehend and deal with their situation, encouraging personal development and resilience.

Moving Programs 

United Way Greater Toronto helps families transition out of temporary shelter by covering moving costs and providing furniture and household items. This support significantly reduces the financial stress associated with moving and helps families establish stable, independent living arrangements. 

Food Bank

To assist families who have moved out of the shelter, this program provides food, transportation, kitchen supplies, supermarket gift cards, dietary foods, and cultural items. Given that many families spend a large portion of their income on rent, this support helps prevent them from becoming homeless again by alleviating some of their financial burdens. 

Emergency Shelters 

United Way Greater Toronto operates two emergency shelters: one for women fleeing violence and another for families, offering a total of 161 beds. For individuals in immediate need of housing owing to a variety of situations, such as an unexpected job loss or domestic abuse, these shelters offer safe havens. Families stay for different lengths of time, some stay for a day, while others stay for up to six months.
