Writers usually like to write what they like to watch. Like life is procedualized, but some writers love to escape to procedualized type of writing. Though as long as it's read well and great, it can be a good mix of both or either or.

So, you have to be careful who you work with and work for. However, you've gotta remember not to take everything at face value. Sometimes people don't know what they actually want until they see it on the screen.

Of course, it is depressing to put your heart into a show and then it fail, but you also get to get the experience and pick yourself back up. You can't take it to heart. 
You fail every thing you don't pitch anyway, so pitch away.

But it also sets a standard for your work and what you do. So as a showrunner you gotta focus and think about what your next idea is going to be and what it is going to be next. So you don't just get defined by one thing, but defined as a great showrunner as a whole. No one hit wonders here!
