A group of Ottomans was lead by military offers met in secret because they were distraught about the declining Ottoman Empire. They were later able to overpower Sultan and gain power.The Young Turks were also called the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP). The members belonging to this group were Turkish Nationalist and xenophobic, they also wanted to get rid of the multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. During the confusion of war, CUP took the opportunity to stabilize Turkish rule by devising a secret plan to exterminate the Armenians because they were seen as a threat since they were with the opposing side during World War I. The leaders of the Ottoman government at the time of the genocide were called the Three Pashas, Mehmed Talaat, Djemal and Ismail Enver Pasha. The Muslims also specifically targeted Christians, and Turks were mostly Muslim and Armenians were mostly Christian. #2-Symbolization: They portrayed the Armenians as infidels.  Infidel literally means unbeliever. - Satch
#3-Discrimination: Non-Muslims had to pay additional taxes and were denied an equal say in government. The lack of non-Muslim influence on the government gave them less of a chance to be able to change things that were unfair, such as extra taxes. Therefore, it would also be more difficult to stop the government from the inside.  - Elisa
#4-Dehumanization: Armenians were forced to walk naked through the desert, without food or water, until they dropped dead.  If they stopped, they were shot.  This is dehumanization because the Ottomans  forced them to remove everything they owned, which made them seem like animals and different.  If you saw a bunch of people naked, starving, at the edge of death, you would not think they were human.  That was their intention. - Satch
#5-Organization: They killed Armenian intellectuals first, to make it more difficult for them to fight back. Turkish militias were deployed.The young Turks organized a special organization, which formed killing squads. The groups consisted of murderers and ex-convicts. - Elisa, Satch
#6-Polarization: Armenian children were forced from their homes, converted to Islam, and given new families. Intermarrying was forbidden, to separate the Turks from the Armenians. The Turks used propaganda to portray the idea that the Armenians are siding with the enemy, which is Russia. - Elisa, Satch
#7-Preparation: The Young Turks claimed they were in search of progress and reform. They took Armenian property and disarmed  Armenian soldiers.The Armenians supplies are taken away, houses are burned, property is taken away, leaders are killed, shootings start, and the death marches begin. - Elisa, Satch
#8- Persecution: Young Turks created a special organization which in turn organized “killing squads” Killing squads were often made up of murderers and other ex-convicts. Government squads also kidnapped children, converted them to Islam and gave them to Turkish families. Also the Ottomans conscripted 60,000 Armenians into their army, and then disarmed and murdered them. - Kavya
#9-Extermination: In 1922 there were only 388,000 Armenians left in the Ottoman Empire. The killing squads tortured Armenians in every way possible.  They burned them alive, threw them off cliffs, raped them, and even crucified them. - Kavya, Satch
#10-Denial: It is currently illegal to discuss the events that happened during the Armenian Holocaust in Turkey, so people are still trying to hide it and pretend it didn't happened, not out of sadness, but out of desire to evade retribution. Armenians say 1.5 million people died, however The Republic of Turkey admits to 300,000 deaths, and says that the death of the Armenians was a necessary war measure.
