The Catawba Science Center has multiple exhibits for different scientific concepts, so we can narrow it down to the exhibits based on energy, electricity, and inventions. The overarching goal for the students is to "think like an inventor."

The students can research different scientists (i.e. Edison) from different time periods and their contributions to life today. They can also create pre-learning questions such as "How is electricity transferred through wires" or "What are other forms of energy?"

Students can also create a list of questions to ask the specialists at the center.

The three main exhibits that students will focus on for this unit are Nano, Energy Avenue, and the Inventor's Workshop. They will bring their science notebooks (the notebooks used throughout the semester) and they will both answer the pre-learning questions as well as write down anything that they found interesting in those exhibits. Students can also get bonus points for visiting other exhibits and writing down new information as well.

They will also take pictures of the exhibits in action to be used in a presentation later on.

Students will use their list of questions for the specialists to learn more about the concepts of electricity, energy, and inventions.

After visiting the science center, students will answer the questions provided on the Google Forms link. They will also use these questions in a culminating assessment where the students will pretend to be inventors following this prompt:

"You and two other classmates are world-renowned scientists in the field of machinery. The town of Boone has created a petition to create a learning center for elementary and middle school students in the area and has asked you to create a presentation to the mayor to persuade him.

Using picture from the science center, your answers to the questions in the Google Form, and any information you wrote down during the trip, create a Google Slides presentation to convince the mayor of Boone that a science center is beneficial to help the students learn about machines and inventing."
