STEM http://www.stemcollaborative.org/additionalResources.html

This website offers very descriptive lesson plans with activities and experiments that students can conduct. These lesson plans have a STEM emphasis. What I really like about this website is that its lesson plans are very specific. It is almost in a 5 E format already. This would be very easy to adapt to the classes needs. I also like that this website lists out what kind of STEM lesson it is. For example, the lesson plan I read over was a K-2 lesson plan, but they wrote that it would align with science. Some lessons stated that they were aligned to reading or social studies. The lesson that I looked at was a rock experiment having kids go collect rocks from around the school and then describe characteristics about the rocks. I think I would use that experiment as an explore section of a 5 E lesson plan.

The teacher types in a topic and a list of resources and online content will appear as suggestions for teachers to add into their lesson. There is a 16-part series for students in grade 3-6. NatureWorks is designed to align with state and national science frameworks and standards and is a great way to introduce young people to the natural sciences. I would use the mini lessons provided to instruct students as small groups or whole class setting.

Skyview Stars: Application

This application is probably the most interactive that I found. I think the students would really enjoy how you can use the application either day or night. This application is more of an informational application. How it works is you point your camera to the sky and it shows you on your screen the different constellations and stars that are in the sky. They give you the names of the stars and gives a little information about them as well. I would use this application in my classroom to do scavenger hunts and give quizzes. I could even give an information sheet for them to fill in for an assessment. There could be group work given and turn it into a competition for whoever finds the most stars and constellations in a certain amount of time.

Funology.com is a great resource for crafts, recipes, magic, games, jokes and trivia. Under the science heading are several experiments that can easily be set up for the classroom. I particularly like the trivia on this site, it can be used as a good “hook” to draw students into the lesson. I would use the trivia section called “Facts about the human body” to open a lesson related to biology (5.L.1.2 Compare the major systems of the human body-digestive, respiratory, circulatory, muscular, skeletal and cardiovascular, in terms of their functions necessary for life).
Some trivia listed includes:
The human body is 75% water. It takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. It takes food seven seconds to go from the mouth to the stomach via the esophagus. A human’s small intestine is 6 meters long. The strongest bone in your body is the femur (thighbone) and it is hollow!
