Entrance into a White School 
Our free verse 
-I sit in an empty classroom.
A blank exam sits in front of me.

One single piece of paper will 
determine my future.

Will I be the change?
Will I be enough?
Is a white school in my future?

These are the questions that rattle in my brain.

My father is over my left shoulder. 
His breath is hot and his anger radiates around me.

My mother is on my right side.
The smell of hunny suckle is strong. 

She smiles.

She tells me 
Ruby, you are the change.
Our future.

-We chose Ruby Bridges because she too was a young child who experienced segregation. Every day she struggled to understand why she was so different. Much like Jacqueline Woods she became an activist and wrote about her experiences.
