Often, I tend to be blinded or sheltered by their culture without knowing. People of the same ethnicity or biological sisters/brothers may come from the same culture, but they can define themselves as in the "gaming culture", "high school culture", etc. It is important to open up and respect cultures that you may not define yourself as, but may eventually become apart of.

Ms. Alaina Craswell - 26

Interviewing Ms. Craswell and having her open up was a great experience and I am grateful for having the chance to interview her. Ms. Craswell explained her background on education, food, religious backgrounds, roles of men and women - particularly how women "wear the pants in the relationship" and do majority of the work (men don't know how to do much), important holidays, disrespect towards the Costa Rican culture and towards individuals, most common misconception, racism, her experience in the US, what her life has been like, and an out-of-ordinary task - joining the military.
Craswell, Alaina. Cultural/Personal interview. 10 January 2019.

Before this interview, I found myself thinking that there are going to be obvious misconceptions, but as I got to listen and put myself in Ms. Craswell's shoes, I found that what I thought was a misconception. Her point of view is different than others and cultural glasses that we unknowingly have, impacted our lives and still do.

Men and women have different roles in their families and women are typically the ruler of the household and as Ms. Craswell said, "you don't mess with mama" and that is simply because they were raised that way. Doing really well in school and having a good education/participating well in school by trying your hardest is very important and valued.

After this interview I found that have a lot more in common with the Costa Rican culture and how you respect parents or participate in school and try to do your best. I knew that many Americans associate really almost any Spanish speaking country with Mexico, especially because it is a bordering country. During the interview, I didn't expect to learn much, but again, I was surprised that the misconceptions that other people may have is almost exactly what I had.Throughout this experience, I learned many interesting facts about cultures and I would like to learn about other cultures in the future.
