In American cultures, we like personal space. We often want people to stay roughly 3-4 feet away from us when talking to them. A stranger coming to our personal space is often a reason for conflict. In Hispanic cultures, personal space is often overlooked. They welcome people into their space and often have close conversations. Hugs and kisses are very normal introductions.

In American cultures, eye contact is something expected and respected. Maintaining eye contact shows maturity and a level of respect for both parties. In Hispanic cultures, averting your eyes can be seen as respectful. Especially when averting eyes away from the eyes of an elder or someone in a position of higher power.

In AMerican cultures, we view time as strict and confiding. Every deadline is strict, and things have to be done when they are schedule. Time does not change, and we have to manage our time wisely. In Hispanic cultures, they view time as expanding and contracting. Their human needs can be treated first and then time can be made for other things. There are often no strict due dates.

In American cultures, our family is often those we live with and maybe grandparents. Aunts and uncles are often not considered immediate family. When you are 18, you are often expected to transition to independent. In Hispanic cultures, family is much greater. All family members are immediate family and even neighbors can become family. Independence can often be looked down upon.
