The Marauders include, Remus Lupin as Mooney, Peter Pettigrew as Wormtail, Sirius Black as Padfoot, and James Potter as Prongs. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the first time that the Marauders are mentioned in the Harry Potter series. They are shown in this novel through the Marauder's Map, which was created by Remus, Peter, Sirius, and James during their time at Hogwarts. It is used to track anybody, anywhere, and anytime while in the castle or on the grounds at Hogwarts. The Marauders history is explained by Remus and Sirius while they, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are in the Shrieking Shack. Remus, Peter, Sirius, and James became best friends while at school and their friendship would have lasted a lifetime if Peter hadn’t sold out James and Lily Potter to Voldemort. I would love to learn more about the inner workings of their friendship, such as Sirius, James, and Peter becoming animagi in order to help Remus during a full moon. Even from the beginning of the first book Snape treated Harry unfairly. Just because James and the rest of the Marauders pulled a few pranks on Snape, it doesn’t give Snape the right to treat Harry the way that he does. When Snape catches Harry with the Marauder's Map, all Snape wants to do is find a way to punish him. This backfires when Snape asks the map to reveal it’s secrets, the map in return says, “Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business.” Snape then proceeds to call Lupin to ask if he thinks that the map is full of dark magic. Of course, being one of the creators of the map, he tells Snape that it is just a mere Zonko product. Snape’s plan to get Harry in trouble falls through yet again. Harry’s only living relative is about to have the soul sucked out of him and Harry is beside Sirius unable to do anything. He attempts to fight off the dementors with the spell “expecto patronum,” but it is useless against so many of them. When all hope seems lost, a man, who Harry believes is his father, comes out of the wood to produce a patronus charm so large that it carries away hundreds of dementors. Later in the novel, when Harry and Hermione turn back time, Harry realizes that the man who fought off all of the dementors was, in fact, himself.
One major internal conflict in this novel is suffered by Harry Potter. Sirius Black is the man convicted of conspiring with Voldemort to murder Harry’s parents. For most of the novel Harry spends his time hating Sirius for something that he never did. While in the shrieking shack, Remus and Sirius explain to Harry that they and his father were friends during their time at Hogwarts. Then, they explain that it was not Sirius who sold out Lily and James, instead, it was Peter their other friend. This takes a toll on Harry; first of all, he is forced to relive his parent’s murders over and over again and now he finds out that it was one of his parent’s best friends that sold them out to Voldemort, talk about needing a shrink.
