Mrs. Cohen chose to work on global connections. Mrs. Cohen shared her thoughts with Mrs. Taylor. They both decided that instead of having the unit be about writing and illustrating a book, the students would be creating a podcast instead. Creating the podcasts in the unit would enable them to include authentic global interactions and would help students embrace the competency of writing for varied purposes and tasks. Mrs. Cohen started off by taking her class on a visual tour of the different continents, countries, and cities. She did this by using hands-on and virtual globes. She then proceeded to explain how their Flat Self needed to visit a specific city, state, or country in the world. After all the final revisions had been made to the story’s beginning and ending, the students started recording their stories.

Ms. Taylor and Mrs. Cohen uploaded the students’ podcasts onto Mrs. Cohen’s classroom website. Mrs. Taylor also sent out a tweet about their links to the podcasts. Within the first day, there were a lot of comments coming in from around the world. Mrs. Cohen read each comment aloud to her students. Both teachers discussed at the end how they felt that the upgraded experience had been a total success.

Reciprocal Teaching is a strategy that has the students share the role of being teacher by allowing them to lead the discussions about their reading. There are four strategies that guide the discussion during Reciprocal Teaching. They are: predicting, questioning, summarizing, and clarifying. You separate your students into mixed-ability groups. One student is designated to be the “teacher” for each group. The student with the predicting job asks the students to predict what they think the reading may be about. The students in charge of questioning remind students to generate questions as they listen to their friends read. The students in charge of the clarifying step is where the students listen and read to remind them to ask themselves what words and phrases are unclear to them. At last, the student in charge of summarizing has the students summarize verbally, within pairs, and then share their reading.
