Fadi loves Photography and loves his family even more. Fadi is innocent and very nice but also very shy. He would do anything for his family. He and his family are trying to escape from Afghanistan to America. Fadi is in charge of his sister Miriam. As they get in the truck her hand slips.

Theme

The theme that I got from reading Shooting Kabul is that there are multiple ways to complete a goal so if one way fails try another. For example, “What? No! Fadi’s eyes widened as a cold numbness settled over his chest”(Senzai 223). Fadi in the book tried to win the photo competition. The grand prize of the photo competition was two tickets to India and that's right next door to Peshawar which is where he needs to be to save his sister. He didn’t win but then he tried to jump on the wrong plane on ‘accident’. That didn’t work either then he thought it wasn’t possible and he gave up. Few weeks later he was looking at the judges photos and there was his sister in the photo! This is why if one way doesn’t work towards your goal keep trying new ways.

Also, the theme from Shooting Kabul has related to me as well. I ways trying to do multiple things (sports) to where i would still have fun. I tried gymnastics since it is a range of things but I wasn’t very happy with that so I changed to rock climbing and parkour. Now i'm the happiest I've been in a while. This relates to the theme That there are multiple ways to achieve a goal so never give up. I only had to try 2 ways and I got there and i’m very happy. To compare this to the world scientist might be the best example. To find a cure to the flue they had to try multiple ways and they might have failed many times but eventually found a vaccine for the flue. This is how the theme, there are multiple ways to complete a goal so if one way fails try another, relates to the world and me.

Compare & contrast

Thinking about Fadi from Shooting Kabul I’m similar to him since we both value Photography and we are different because he runs from fights and doesn’t tell the truth about it. In the book Fadi gets in a fight with Felix and Ike. At first he runs from the fight until they catch him. He doesn’t want to fight to hurt them but to protect himself that is until they break his camera. Then he goes into all out fight mode and that shows how much he values photography. Also, I use to use my friends camera for photography and we would print them and put them on her wall. She moved away so now I’m going to buy myself a camera and keep taking pictures and putting them on my wall. This is what I learned about me and Fadi being similar.

Now since me and Fadi have something to compare each other with we need to contrast that Fadi would run from a fight then fight back and not speak up about it. In the novel Shooting Kabul Fadi got in a fight with Ike and Felix he started running from them pretty much knowing he couldn’t escape. After the fight he went home and knowing the kids that started the fight he told his parents he didn’t know. He did the same thing at school too. I would have fought them because I don’t want to seem like a coward but I would only get them onto the ground long enough for me to get away. Afterwards I would have told my parents who started the fight and i would do the same at school. I feel like if Fadi put down his backpack and fought, his camera wouldn’t have been broken. This is why I think Fadi and I are different.

Symbolism

I feel like the symbol I found in Shooting Kabul was a Camera. The Camera is represented in the begining of the novel because Fadi doesn’t have any film to use but he picture the photos either through his camera or without his camera. This showed his love for cameras and it made him happy along with distracting him from troubles which is very good. It represents the middle of the novel because he is in a photo competition. He is finally getting to take pictures with the film he has from school. I love how hard he tries with his photos so that he can win and get the trip to save his sister. It also distracts him from that at moments because he is have tons of fun with his camera. It shows the symbol in the end because the photo competition gallery lead him to finding his sister. The went to the photo gallery from the competition since his friend ‘dragged’ him there since she wanted him to have fun. He did, and when he was looking at the judges photos his sister was in one of them. That is why the Camera represents this novel because with out it Miriam might have been lost forever.

In conclusion, I think the author wanted the readers to know how hard times were in the middle East. I think this because at the beginning when they are trying to get on the truck it’s in so much detail that it helps the reader understand how rough it was. It shows it more by how hard it is for young kids since they aren’t sure about whats going on and the book shows that by Miriam getting left behind. In the middle of the book it’s rough since they spent a lot of their money on their escape car, plane tickets, and the passports, so they had to live we family members and then a bad apartment. It shows this in the end of the book because he is being bullied and beat up for being and immigrant from the middle east. It also has some up sides because if you find other people that came from the same place then you could become friends with them. This is why i feel like the author wants us to know how hard it is coming from the middle east.
