Daisy Buchanan is a young girl coming from Louisville, Kentucky. She is married to Tom Buchanan, a rich man, with a wealthy background. She is unhappy in her marriage, as she thinks that Tom has a mistress and is cheating behind her back. She is also cousin to Nick Caraway, and is secretly in love with Jay Gatsby, her former lover.

"I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it." (Daisy, page 14) This quote tells of something sad behind Daisy's pessimistic personality that she puts on. I think it is also a foreshadow on the author's part, on how she had waited five long years for Gatsby as he fought in the war, but ended up being swiped away by Tom Buchanan just as Gatsby had come back.

"And I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." (Daisy, page 20) In this quote she is talking about her little 2 year old baby daughter. What she says correlates directly to what she feels in the inside about the society at the time; she feels as if women in this time period are seen as having no other role than to be pretty and to be shown on a pedestal.

Daisy seems to show off a positive and outlooking manner, but in her mind, there is sadness about a life she could've had, with Gatsby, had Tom not showed up. This is shown later on when Nick arranges for the two past lovers to meet up once again, as Gatsby is still in love with her. This is important as it shows that Daisy, too, still has feelings for him, as they spend their time together, at Nick's small house, then frolicking and walking the streets of Long Island, and finally heading back to Gatsby's big house.

Daisy spent five long years waiting for Gatsby, as he fought in the war, as they were still madly in love with each other at the time. They would have gotten back together, had it not been for Tom Buchanan who showed up and offered her riches to marry him. She chose to marry Tom because it was most likely and sensible, seeing as how she didn't know when Gatsby would be able to get out of the war, or if he would die. There was also the factor that he was rich, and that with him, she could live her life comfortably. She now lives in her mansion in Long Island that Tom bought.
