As someone who comes from a low economical class, I can imagine that poor people don't relate with the "ever- fighting spirit" that the Rotterdam flag represent, but they whould prefer for life to be easier and for them to be able to afford a decent living standard.

I wanted to create a connection between myself and Rotterdam since I am also new to the city. After hearing about its history full of destruction and rebuilding, I found similarities in my life and connected them to Rotterdam.

This is a board game where you can experience different obstacles as Rotterdam faced in its past. BUT with a twist: ME. Now you get to see my version and relationship with the city. You'll get to succeed and sometimes fail at these obstacles as in (my) life.

Long version (for the patience souls):

I felt connected to Rotterdam in a non-traditional or physical way but on a metaphorical level. I decided to take the 3 topics that spoke to me and reflect them in my illustration. Then I divided all the big and small things into these 3 steps.

Rotterdam bombings: We spoke about Rotterdam's bombing during World War II. As a jew first time living in a country that was part of this war makes a different connection between me and this country. I took the bombings as the big events that weren't up to me but had huge effects on my life.

Contrast: We talked about the past and present. Also the contrast between them in Rotterdam's history. Modern vs. classic. I wanted to point out the dilemmas or little situations that were sometimes easy to get out of but sometimes not so much. Housing: We heard that it was not a picnic back in the days to live in Rotterdam and for most, it still is not.

Even if I did not grow up in a house with a toilet in the kitchen, I had my share of unlucky events.

I also wanted to include Erasmus Bridge and Market Hall as a figure. Used the bridge to connect my journey and create a path for the board game. And Market Hall as a pattern and as an ode to my love of food.

All in all, we got to listen to a city's never-ending renovation story. With every obstacle or every struggle and need the city found its way to live up to its expectations. It may not be perfect, but it is efficient. So in a way, it is as if a living human being. That is where I come into the picture.

When i visited Netherlands five years ago i saw that even the buildings give me emotions. Being here after all these struggle i had especially my emotions finally for the first time i am feeling hero in my life so as the small character i am going forward but with a look on the past and my emotions , the girl presents the past with traditional clothes and holding a dutch symbolism tha means a good luck , that even after the bombarding period rotterdam had , the people here rebuilt it again and make it with character .

Rotterdams history is all about change. As a base of the illustration I chose a hourglass to represent that changes happen over time. Sometimes things need a bit longer to develop but during other times, changes can happen very fast. I wanted to create an artwork showing the history of Rotterdam as a city while the concept of ,,change'' can also be connected to every other kind of topic as it is present in everyones life. Sometimes new unknown things can be scary at first but in the end you realize that they are needed to get us to the point we are at right now.

Housing issue during the industrial period

With this illustration I wanted to represent how tight the living space was during the industrial revolution for low-income families in Rotterdam. What’s immediately visible is how people are squeezed inside of the building, however there’s a couple of finer details that also communicate the same message: there are several mailboxes on the front door of the building, way more than how many there should be, and there’s also too much garbage at the entrance!

What I wanted to express in this illustration is the reinvention of Rotterdam. I wanted to imply the Rotterdam's progress from the past to the present. The beginning of this drawing began with the characteristics of the roots of trees. When you cut down a tree, it looks like it has completely disappeared, but the large tree roots are still in the ground. By drawing the root in the shape of a building in the past of Rotterdam, I expressed that what was in the past did not completely disappear and still exists. Then, I drew the train that contributed the most to the development of the past to the present, around the stem. At the very top of the tree, you can see some of the representative structures of Rotterdam that we can still see around us today. By drawing as if it's spreading into pieces, I wanted to give the impression that they could disappear one day. By contrasting the chroma of color , I showed the difference between the past and the present in a clear way.

Through the lesson, what I remember the most is the fact that Erasmus left the city when he was 4 and never returned lmao. So I made the illustration of a little boy who left the city at 4 y.o, surrounding by a grown up version of himself as Erasmus Desiderius (1466-1536) and the background is the Erasmus Bridge (1996). Color green and white as Rotterdam signature flag. Enjoy!

I wanted to illustrate the grim bleakness of the working class after the bombings; small houses made even more inhumane by being broken down and reduced to rubble, having to face reality and carry on, all framed by a fire boundary tile which are normally used to indicate areas affected by the aftermath of the bombardment.

I wanted to depict the drug and housing problem Rotterdam had in the 80s and 90s. Freddie told us his mom used to say: 'watch the needles' when he went outside to play. He also showed us a picture of a kitchen with a toilet in it which I drew in the right corner. I tried to portray the poverty of Rotterdam from 30/40 years ago where poor people lived in houses that were way too small and where they had to deal with drug addiction.

The main thing that stuck after the lecture was how fast the city was evolving and rebuilding itself, so I made a train moving at a very fast pace with some of the buildings of Rotterdam that have been destroyed ( like De Beurs, Delftse Poort, Coolsingel Hospital and Uitkijktoren) inside the windows. Rotterdammers are outside, they lost the train as they are struggling to keep up with the City’s fast changes.

I found a lot of notes that inspired me to make an illustration. However, all of them were connected to Laurenskerk. The following question stuck in my mind after the lecture: "This beautiful old church has stood there for centuries and has survived the bombings, but can we be sure that it won't be this modern city's next victim?" With this illustration I wanted to contrast the feet sculptures, which represent the steps of the first Rotterdamers. Insted of curiosity and creation, my "step" represents destruction.

I was really surprized by the fact that the idea for the Depot's design was the Ikea salad bowl, and also, another photo from the presentation that got stuck in my brain was the one with Rotterdam's skyline on one side of the river and the trees and the cows eating grass on the other side. This is a combination of the two images that depicts Rotterdam, a city where people and nature live together, which sometimes come together in the strangest of ways.

The main thing I took away from the guest lecture is the creation of Depot’s “Ikea salad bowl”. When Ferrie mentioned that they don’t even hide the fact that its inspired by a salad bowl, I could not help but imagine 2 architects contemplating this peculiar idea.

"The natural cycle of Rotterdam" :

When I was listening to Ferry's speech I mainly took notes of the names of places that disappeared or those that emerged recently so I can compare those 2 Rotterdams. I also took notes of significant periods for Rotteram.
In my opinion Rotterdam by not preserving historical buildings and building new ones developped its own unique history. Rotterdam's nature is now building new facilities from time to time like flowers grow new leaves for spring. For me it's the natural cycle of Rotterdam. I decided to draw that concept.

As the guestworkers that entered the country after the Second World War were pretty much essential to the rebuilding of Rotterdam, I almost felt obligated, being a second generation descendant of these workers myself, to create a piece speaking on this part of the history of Porfot that is often ignored. I say ignored, as many people seem to discredit the extent of the work actually done by these people.

The image features a father with his two daughters, in a typical Turkish late 70’s-early 80’s home. Next the the smallest daughter is a protest sign saying “laat het tulpenland geen slavenland worden” what translates to “don’t let the tulip country become a slave country” which is a direct quote from one of the protests held back in 1986.

Rotterdam has been bombed heavily during the german invasion in the Netherlands. The Netherlands had to say goodbye to their old historic Rotterdam. Like a phoenix rises from it's ash, so did Rotterdam. The city centre died but was reborn in a new way, with new buildings and architecture. And the old buildings were left in ash and dust.

During the lecture I was very shocked of all the destruction historical buildings have suffered in the past centuries due to the bombing and questionable decisions from the municipality.
It‘s sad that it takes some artists like Cor Kraat to bring back some pieces of the past.
Here, I illustrated the old gate to the Delfste Poort, once one of Rotterdam‘s most iconic buildings, on top of Cor Kraat‘s recreation. I wanted to illustrate, what could have been, if the original monument was still standing proudly instead of it’s stale doppelgänger. It could have been one of Rotterdam’s main attractions and symbols.

The fact that the Laurens church stayed almost intact through so many historical periods and is still a staple in Rotterdams ever-changing landscape was really impressive to me. I was inspired by the photos of Rotterdam after the bombings, where you can really grasp how impressive this church is.

When i was listening to Ferries presentation he showed us old pictures of the street life of rotterdam. i got really inspired by that, i realised that the city is nothing without its people. So in that spirit i decided to go out on the streets myself and draw the current people of rotterdam, trying to quickly capture the essence of the people.

I really enjoyed learning about Rotterdam and how many changes its been through in its history, but one theme I noticed was how Rotterdammers have never been afraid to innovate and dream big when it comes to their architecture. I took that concept with some specific examples from the lecture and put them in this silly little comic :-)
