Tower, Bud. "Seven-Word Lines and Four-Letter Words: The Science of Songwriting." americansongwriter, http://americansongwriter.com/2011/09/seven-word-lines-and-four-letter-words-the-science-of-songwriting/

Bud Tower explains how there are always people looking for a certain algorithm of sorts to how they write song lyrics. He goes on to describe that there have been patterns in the most recent hit songs, including common use of seven-word lines and four-letter words. In Tower's own words, "Songs have so many repeating short words that the average number of characters per word in both songs is below 4—those are very short words indeed. The lesson in that is that if you are using a lot of complex words, you will have to offset that complexity with short words to keep your averages low." Tower continues explaining that although there are similarities, each song/artist also has a very unique style that is required as well to create a hit song.

As Tower continues to explain the art of lyric-writing, he gets to the topic of word choice. In song lyrics, the careful choosing of words means everything, so how does a lyricist know what to write? He approaches this with facts collected from research; most top songs have had the same reading level, usually around or under first grade level. Along these same lines, top songs were also common to have extremely high reading ease scores, which is based on the average amount of syllables/words in each line or word, word length, and the amount of words with over two syllables. According to his research, all were within 5% of maximum reading ease. Tower goes on to explain that this should be recognized by lyricists, and used by keeping lyrics simple and understandable. He backs up this idea be restating the facts that all of the past years top songs have followed these principles almost exactly.

Stolpe, Andrea. ¨Simple Tips For Better Chord Progressions.¨ takenote,
https://online.berklee.edu/takenote/simple-tips-for-better-chord-progressions/

Andrea Stolpe´s beliefs dealing with songwriting, include the fact that chord progression should work different, but together, with the lyrics via mood changes and harmony. For example, some chords, such as 2 major chords, can highlight a thought or idea. Also, choosing the correct cadence of chords can change the rhythmic feel and mood of the song. I wonder if short cadences make a song sad, or if long held out cadences make a song sad. Depending on length, I can use different counts to make it sad or happy. Later in the article, the author states that when writing music, chord repetition is very important.

Stople reiterates the idea of mood changing, when she stated, ¨When we choose chords, we’re choosing a mood that gives the listener a musical interpretation of the lyric message.¨ What the author means is that, when we choose a new chord for a new line, we have to think of the mood and message we want to portray to the audience. If I am trying to write a happy song, I will probably have a lot or chords that resolve each other. By doing this, It will completely change the feel of the song. For example, if we want a sad message, then we might use a minor chord progression, and if we want more of an upbeat mood, we might use a major chord. Unfortunately, he does not state what keys or names of chords that would help with this idea.

Based on the article, The authors thoughts can be used to help understand and give a rough outline of a good song. The article emphasizes he idea of chord progression. When writing a song, use chords that compliment the musical feel and lyrical message.

Blume, Jason. "Show, Don't Tell: 3 Steps to Writing Better Lyrics." bmi, https://www.bmi.com/news/entry/showdont_tell_3_steps_to_writing_better_lyrics

In this article, Blume uses the acronym AID (Action, Imagery, Detail) to help lyricists easily remember how to make lyrics more artful. He explains that for lyrics to be interesting to listeners, they must show them what the feeling is like rather than tell them, similar to writing a novel, but still very different. He demonstrates his acronym by using an ordinary sentence and putting it through all three stages into complete form. This emphasizes the importance of writing lyrics more creatively.

As a lyricist, I can use this information by applying it to all of my lines. Not only will it add pizazz and more creativity, but will also make them more enjoyable to listeners. In Blume's view, "Our goal, when we share a song, is to evoke emotion in our listeners—to have them not only know what the singer is feeling, but to empathize—to feel the emotion. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by bringing your audience inside the world of your song—showing them a scene unfolding—instead of simply telling them how the singer feels." I hope to be able to write better with this new information.

Gary Ewer states in his blog, chords can have different meaning. He claims that, different chord progressions are used for different genres of music. Within his website, Ewer lists several chord progression patterns, for several different music types. Ewer concedes that, "And the fact is, one of the most important characteristics of chord progressions is the fact that on some level, they need to be at least a bit predictable. This is not a weakness, it’s a feature." What the author means by this claim, is that the audience should hear in the next chord in their head so that they will be capable of singing along.

The authors thoughts can be very useful when it comes to the chord and music writing stage. I think that if I listen to the words of Gary, I can be very successful. When writing a pop song, 4ths and 3rds are very catchy and flow the best with the song type. When writing my song, I think that If I use the proper chord progressions, it will sound beautiful.
