Indirect Characterization

In the story, "The Interlopers," Ulrich von Gradwitz can be described as a forgiving person based on his actions and mindset. After Ulrich drank from his wine flask, "he looked across with something like a throb of pity to where his enemy lay, just keeping the groans of pain and weariness from crossing his lips." (page 191, column 2) Later on in the story, after Georg Znaeym refused Ulrich's offer of a sip from his flask, Ulrich "looked across at the man who was fighting so grimly against pain and exhaustion. In the pain and languor that Ulrich himself was feeling, the old fierce hatred seemed to be dying down." (page 192, column 1) This cite of information supports the statement that Ulrich is a forgiving person because of his sudden change of heart.

Symbol of Character

This is an image of a yin yang symbol and it represents Ulrich's character and personality throughout the story. In the beginning, Ulrich could have came off as a hateful person, but later on he showed his true colors. In this case, Ulrich embodies yang, the good side (the white). Around the end of story, Ulrich was the one who came up with the idea to end the feud between him and Georg Znaeym.

"But a man who has been brought up the code of a restraining civilization cannot easily nerve himself to shoot down his neighbor in cold blood and without a word spoken, except for an offense against his hearth and honor." (page 190, column 2) Based on this quote, Ulrich von Gradwitz can be portrayed as an honorable and hesitant person because he shows respect to his family for wanting to kill Georg Znaeym, but his humanity stops him from shooting Georg.

" 'So you're not killed, as you ought to be, but you're caught, anyway,' he [Georg Znaeym] cried, 'caught fast. Ho, what a jest, Ulrich von Gradwitz snared in his stolen forest. There's a real justice for you!' " (page 191, column 1)

At this time, Georg and Ulrich are trapped under a beech tree. They are both making conversation and this statement from Georg shows that Ulrich was a bad person based on the last sentence of the quote.

" 'Neighbor,' he [Ulrich] said presently, 'do as you please if your men come first. It was a fair compact. But as for me, I've changed my mind. If my men are the first to come, you shall be the first to be helped, as though you are my guest.' " (page 192, column 1)

After moments after being stuck under the tree, Ulrich von Gradwitz decided to become the bigger person and end their quarrel. This shows that Ulrich is full of hospitality and merciful.
