It is important to do what you think is right even though it may be against the rules. The author used that as a theme because it was illegal to help slaves escape to Canada but they felt that it was the right thing to do. “You ought to be ashamed, John! Poor, homeless, houseless creatures! It’s a shameful, wicked, abominable law, and I’ll break it, for one, the first time I get a chance; and I hope I shall have a chance, I do! Things have got to a pretty pass, if a woman can’t give a warm supper and a bed to poor, starving creatures, just because they are slaves, and have been abused and oppressed all their lives, poor things!” This shows that Mary wants to help the slaves even though it is against the law because she thinks it is the right thing to do.

"Maybe another one could be: what if it had been your father lying on the pavement across the firehouse? What if it were you?" This is a quote from

Why Doing The Right Thing Doesn't Always Work In A 'Rules World', an article on npr.org. This article talks about how it's always important to do the right thing even though it may be against the rules because what if it were you the one who needed the saving or the help ETC.

As Tom* explains to Prue that she should live a christian life, she sais, “I looks like gwine to heaven, an’t thar where white folks is gwine? S’pose they’d have me thar? I’d rather go to torment, and get away from Mas’r and Missis." This is a common thing humans say when they have to do something that they don't agree with and believe that death or a more suffering option is a more moral option. A song called Death Before Dishonor by Five finger death punch has these lyrics, "I choose death before dishonor
I'd rather die than live down on my knees", which I think represents this perfectly.

Cassy escaped slavery and Tom* wouldn't tell his master information about her escape. This quote, “Mas’r, if you was sick, or in trouble, or dying, and I could save ye, I’d give ye my heart’s blood; and, if taking every drop of blood in this poor old body would save your precious soul, I’d give ’em freely, as the Lord gave his for me. Oh, Mas’r! don’t bring this great sin on your soul! It will hurt you more than’t will me! Do the worst you can, my troubles’ll be over soon; but, if ye don’t repent, yours won’t never end”, he does not want to give information about her escape because he believes that slavery is wrong and she should be free and as a result he was going to be punished but the quote shows that he is willing to do anything for his master if it means he can still help slaves escape. He also explains that it's better for his master to not punish him then to punish him.
