Symbols found in Catcher in the Rye by Sam Lucero

Symbols are often characters, settings, images, actions, or other objects that stand in for larger ideas. Symbols can shift meaning depending on how they are used in the text. We will be working as a class to create a descriptive and detailed Padlet you can use to help guide your final project.

What I did do, I gave old Sally Hayes a buzz . She went to Matry A. Woodruff, and I knew she was home because I'd had this letter from her a couple of weeks ago . I used to think she was quite intelligent, in my stupidity . The reason I did was because she knew quite a lot about theater and plays and literature and all that stuff .

In the story, Holden repeatedly brings up how he dislikes people who are "phonies." But he himself admits how much he lies to people, making him a hypocrite. Because of this, I think the song 'フォニイ(phony)' by KAFU fits him perfectly. The line, "I am missing from the mirror’s reflection. There is only a “fake” that everyone mistook for someone else." reminds me of how he spins elaborate lies to strangers about his identity. I think both "I cried, still unable to say even goodbye" and "Why, oh why, does it hurt here so much?" can be applied to the loss of his brother, who he is still unable to get over the death of, and possibly even how he feels about Jane.
