if pacing weren't breaking my back and causing ulcers as it was. If I took time to do this I would probably be chased out of education. My stress level couldn't handle trying to keep up with the county's/state's pacing desires and the luxury of allowing the students to go down the "rabbit hole" of amazement and love of learning.

I love this! In fact Amy Dancy introduced me to 20% Time at the beginning of the year. I think the success of this assignment is in the structure. For me, I could have students choose a theme and an art medium that they want to research and explore. I could get them supplies and guide the experience, but laying out the expectation early is key. I love the Shark Tank pitch idea where students put together a short proposal and define what they think successful learning looks like for their project.

I went to a session at the National Art Ed Convention on Choice-Based Education, which is very much the same concept. It was very intriguing! I love the idea of students owning their learning. I would imagine that this would be a very scary thought for a core teacher that faces SOL testing, but Art on the other hand lends itself to giving students a lot more autonomy. Perhaps I will be brave enough to try!!!

Dowell's students completed a Genius Hour project last year in English; we have it in our plans for students to take on again this year. I'm excited about trying it out with my advanced students for the first time this year, but also anxious. I know it needs a lot of structure, and the ties to our curriculum must be strong in order to continue forward movement with our pacing guide. These would be my largest personal roadblocks towards the idea.
