People don’t like to change initially. I think as humans, we’re creatures of habit. We like to stay with the status quo. People like to say “Don’t fix what isn’t broken.” Even though oftentimes, that feeling is just at the initial stage of change, it still happens every time. Many times in education, changes happen top-down, which can spark a harsh initial reaction from overworked teachers. It can actually be a major barrier to innovation (Heick, 2012). Once people open up to change, they in-turn open themselves up to growth.

To seek opportunities for growth, people in education attend professional development trainings, read books, and maybe listen to podcasts. These can be incredible opportunities if they are not the typical, mandatory, one-size-fits-all sessions and readings (Couros, 2015). A great way to seek out growth is to stay open-minded during collaboration and discussion with colleagues. Those experiences force people to think about what they are doing and why they are doing it.

Change and growth do not look the same everywhere for everyone. Everyone needs different amounts of time to seek out and adjust to change, and once adjusted, they may need different amounts of time to grow. Some people may not choose to grow and have a negative outlook on the change. Carol Dweck’s Ted Talk talks about the power of yet. “Yet” is a useful way to celebrate the process of growth. Growth deserves to be celebrated during and after it occurs.

An example of growth would be a student’s mindset at the beginning and the end of high school Spanish. In the beginning of Spanish One, many students talk about how confusing Spanish is and how they have to translate everything back to English in order to understand it. By the end of their four years, many students are able to read, write, listen, and speak short amounts of the language without having to translate at all. This process of language acquisition is fascinating and deserves to be noticed.

In a Spanish classroom, an example of change would be the process of reading and understanding a story or passage. When I assign a reading in my class, I like to point out that yes, the reading is difficult, for now. But by the end of the lesson or unit, I make sure I point out that the students can now read that same reading with ease. I celebrate them and let them know how proud of themselves they should be as they are reading in a language apart from their native one.
