모조

are third-year students at Saetbyeol Middle School: Yubin Park, Eunseok Kang, Minkyeong Pyo, and Choyeon Kim. Through an English class activity, we introduced Korea and ourselves using Padlet and asked questions about Germany, allowing us to have an indirect cultural exchange.

We mainly focused on learning about Korean and German cultures. First, let us introduce Korean culture.

Korea has many diverse ways of expressing things linguistically. For example, the color blue can be described in various ways such as 푸르댕댕하다, 퍼렇다, or 퍼러스름하다 all slightly different shades or nuances of “blue.”

A traditional Korean food is Bulgogi. Bulgogi is a dish made by stir-frying marinated pork with vegetables. It tastes slightly sweet and salty.

In Korean, the word “our” is often used instead of “my.” For example, instead of saying “my mom” or “my dad,” we say “our mom” and “our dad.”

Next, we would like to ask some questions about Germany:

We’ve heard that ham is famous in Germany. What kinds of ham do you eat, and how often?

What do German people think are the typical personality traits or characteristics of Germans?

If we were to visit Germany, what are some must-see places you would recommend?

It would have been great if we could meet and ask these questions in person, but unfortunately, we can’t. We hope there will be another opportunity for exchange in the future. Have a great day!

(강은석,김초연,표민경,박유빈)

제목 :Korean Hanbok

Hello! We're happy to meet you. We'd like to introduce you to hanbok, the traditional clothing of Korea.

Hanbok is Korea's traditional attire, and it has been worn since ancient times, starting from the Three Kingdoms period. Over time, it has gone through some changes during the Goryeo, Joseon, and modern eras.

There were differences in hanbok depending on a person’s social status (such as noble, commoner, or servant), gender (male or female), age (child, adult, elderly), season (spring, summer, fall, winter), and purpose (weddings, funerals, rituals, etc.).

Hanbok is known for its loose and flowing silhouette, which is quite different from the more fitted styles of traditional European clothing. Especially for women, the hanbok spreads out beautifully, giving an elegant and graceful impression. The design often combines both straight and curved lines harmoniously.

Hanbok usually features bright and vibrant colors. A ribbon called "otgoreum" tied at the front adds to the charm of the outfit.

Now that you know a bit about hanbok, let us introduce the different types of traditional hanbok and who used to wear them. There are daily hanbok, ceremonial hanbok, ritual hanbok, royal hanbok, and special-purpose hanbok.

1. Daily Hanbok (일상복)

This was everyday clothing, made simple and practical for comfort and movement.

The upper garment is called jeogori, and it was worn by both men and women. Though its shape slightly changed over time, it typically had modest colors.

Baji (pants): Worn by men. Because most people were farmers, the pants were wide at the thighs for comfort and tied tightly at the ankles for easier movement.

Chima (skirt): Worn by women. It’s a long, wide skirt that flows from the waist to the ankles.

2. Ceremonial Hanbok (예복)

These were worn for important events or special days. The colors and decorations were especially fancy.

Wedding hanbok: The bride wore green jeogori with a red chima, called "nok-ui-hong-sang." The groom wore a long formal robe called danryeong, with a hat and belt called samo-daegwan.

Dangui: Worn by royal women during weddings or royal ceremonies. It was longer than the jeogori and tied with a belt instead of a ribbon.

Jobok: Worn by kings or high officials during national ceremonies. It had a formal shape and was worn with a traditional hat called gwan.

3. Ritual Hanbok (의례복)

These were worn during ancestral rites, religious ceremonies, or national rituals. They carried special meaning for each event.

Jebok: Worn when performing ancestral rites. Men usually wore white or black hanbok, and women wore a white jeogori with a black chima.

Hakchangbok: Worn by scholars or Confucian students during academic or ritual events. It had long sleeves and a wide hem and was typically white or black for a neat appearance.

4. Special-Purpose Hanbok (특례한복)

These were designed for specific jobs or groups.

Mubok: Worn by shamans during rituals.

Gunbok: Military uniforms during the Joseon period. These were designed for practical use and mobility in battle.

So, that’s our introduction to hanbok, the traditional clothing worn by our ancestors in Korea. Even today, people wear modernized hanbok, especially for weddings or traditional holidays. Hanbok is a proud symbol of Korea’s heritage and history.

Now that we've shared our tradition with you, we have some questions we're curious about, too:

1. What is the most delicious food in Germany?

2. If we visit Germany, what is a place we absolutely must see?

3. What part of German history do German people consider most important?

4. What are some traditional German cultural customs?

5. What is your traditional clothing?

6. What do you do on your national day?

7. Could you introduce Germany’s traditional clothing to us?

8. What kind of image do German people have of Korea and Korean students?

Let us know what you think! We’re really looking forward to hearing from you 😊

(Jeon ye eun, Ryegeumju, ieedrow, Bang Dajeong, Hong Jong Hyun)
