I’m only going to analysing this in only 4 sections as I think that’s all I need to do to get across my points for this video.

My final music video that I’m going to be analysing is one produced by the underrated artist Bastille. The song name is “Good Grief” which was released to YouTube on the 22nd of August 2016, so this makes it a fairly recent song, not even being released a year ago. Over this time space it has racked up over 5 million views. This video is primarily concept based which is different to the previous two music videos ive analysed, I think its good that I choose at least one song to break down that’s concept as it means there’s more range. The genre of this song would be pop or alternative music but I don’t think it falls into any obvious category.

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?

The visuals for this video is very unique and stands out from a lot of other music videos I’ve seen, it contains many clips of different situations happening, these all contrast each other but are in no way related at all. For example all these clips are reoccurring too, a clip of a runner will be shown early on during the video, then the next clip will be a group of bank robbers which will have no relation the clip that will follow and this continues. These visuals have no relation to the lyrics that are used. The song title ‘good grief’ In this song, singer Dan Smith means it literally – happiness in time of distress, this could also be shown through the visuals, for example a clip is shown of a women dancing in a shower of money while also standing in a burning building. In an interview with the lead singer, he said that he often “loves hooks and making big pop songs that hopefully you’ll remember, but lyrically, I’m drawn to topics that are slightly less well trodden.” This song is clearly about loss, the ups and downs of it and those moments of euphoria you get, this is shown very well through the visuals as the clips all include moments of fear and loss as well as a some sort of gain.

When the video has a clear hard beat the clips do change with but most of the time it seems like the music and visuals are different entity’s all together until they end up working together at certain points. The main instrumental you hear during the song is the drums, there are certain parts in the video where this is all you can hear, this works well as it clearly sets up the chorus and the next verse. The video had very different paces in its duration but at the same time kept a type of musical theme with each verse While the music slows down for a certain part of the song, the visuals slow down with it. there’s a voice over which is dialogue from a 1995 movie ‘weird science’ which was put in for a nostalgic effect, as this plays the visuals are in slow motion to make the voice over more effective. I think the record company wanted to make this as opposite to modern music videos by not wearing stylish outfits and going much more abstract to bring in attention because of the originality.

Conclusion
i have decided that these codes and conventions dont match the music video i want to produce, this is because for my music video to be good, it needs to share conventions from other music videos like the original and others from the pop genre, i considered doing my music video like this one however, after my analysis ive decided this wouldn't fit well with a Bruno mars song.

The record company is trying to sell this track by making this music video stand out a lot, they do this by making a lot of impressive unique shots throughout the video focusing on very unique props such as the cars used and the costumes. The costumes used are very flamboyant and bring in attention to the video, they all seem to be from a different time period too, mostly from decades ago. The record company also wants to create a lot of visuals for the video as this is the main attraction, they include a lot of different aspects and visuals during one shot.
