To be honest, I chose to review typed documents this week, mainly because I wanted to ease into the assignment by doing something that'll be somewhat easy, you know? I looked at a couple of handwritten documents, and I stared at my screen for like 6 minutes trying to decipher the handwriting. Not to mention, most (if not all) of the documents are in German, so it added to the workload of trying to make the document make sense. One thing that I am most anxious for is to actually transcribe. I know that there are people at the LOC that'll proofread and fix any issues, but the thought of messing up is still lingering in my mind.

Goals:

An obvious educational goal for me is to actually get the material.

Time spent: 1hr 18 minutes

Tasks Completed:

- I switched from “Family Papers” to “General Correspondence” this week to expand my understanding of the era in which Arendt lived and to explore what influenced her writing and shaped her as a person.

- Dived right into reviewing to get back into the groove of looking and comprehending the material. The picture above was the first picture that I decided to start the week with!

- Reviewed 5-6 documents

- Contributed to some “In progress” documents, and figuring out some transcriptions that other couldn’t figure out (!!!)

- Dipped my toes in transcribing the cursive documents (I didn’t do much in the cursive department, but something is better than nothing!)

Reflection:

This week’s documentation and work process went pretty smoothly! I was finally getting the hang of how transcribing works and got over my fear of doing it. When transcribing, I felt as if I got the material more, because I really had to take my time with the document. Same thing goes with reviewing, but reviewing is more like looking for any mistakes. To me, transcribing keeps me focused with the documents and materials, and that has helped substantially with absorbing the information. What I learned about myself this week (Mirror) was figuring out how much I actually enjoy deciphering the documents, and how the satisfaction I get when I was able to break down documents that look complicated to something that looks more accessible. Once I got over the constant nagging in the back of my mind saying, “you’re just going to mess it up,” transcribing became fun to be honest, which leads me to my microscope thought. What I learned about the DSLP this week was that people are there to help one another. Like I mentioned in my last documentation, I was so intimidated to transcribe anything, because I felt like I was just going to ruin someone else’s work, but that’s why people review the documents and fix any errors. After this week’s DSLP work, I learned (Binocular) how interconnected Hannah Arendt’s works and themes in American Literature are, as both explore concepts of democracy, power, freedom, etc. My new thinking (Augmented Reality) is to really think about how service-learning changes the way I make connections with my academic work and like real-world impacts. Like for example, how does my role in the DSLP contribute to historical preservation? Crazy work to me!

Seanna Inoa

Time spent: 2 hours exact

Tasks Completed:

Eager to finish the rest of this project, I dove right into reviewing a couple of documents under the “General Correspondence” page

Fixed a couple of sentences here and there per usual!

Finished transcribing a document and sent that into review

Then reviewed the rest of the time!

Reflection:

After completing this project, I realized how much time I spent on this project just transcribing. The document above took nearly half of the time that I needed to complete this project, and it shows how much patience and precision one has to have to transcribe. Another thing that I realized while doing this project, is how I am literally looking into someone’s business. I know how odd that sounds but stay with me. The project I worked on (Hannah Arendt) was mostly in German, and when I would transcribe, I would have to google translate some words to make sure it’s an actual word in German. Additionally, when I would review, I would put the transcription into google translate to see if any words look wrong, and I would actually understand what the context of the document was about. With all the work I’ve done on this project, I’ve gathered plenty of information about who and what Hannah Arendt was communicating with and what topics were important in her correspondence.

Evidence of DSLP Completion:

This Google document shows just some screenshots of my activity on this project, and a page of other documents that I contributed to but couldn’t screenshot.
