Why was MLK Jr. a radical change agent?

Martin Luther King Jr. (Born Jan 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia) was a staple figure in civil rights and the youngest male to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. He is mainly known for his “I have a dream” speech and his efforts to segregate African-Americans into American society. He is referred to as a radical change agent because he pushed against the law so that people can have equality. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955: a civil rights movement, just 4 days after Rosa Parks was arrested, where African-Americans refused to ride the Montgomery public buses. This led to Montgomery segregating their bus systems.

To what extent is this person truly radical?

MLK Jn. King was greatly inspired by his father, Martin Luther, and historical stories. He saw how blind people had been in the past and how they had been led to do horrible deeds. He believed that the cure for our blindness is intelligence and touch mindedness. He saw how racial prejudice and segregation were based on "groundless fears, suspicions, and misunderstandings." He explained that "The call for intelligence is a call for open-mindedness, sound judgment, and love for truth. It is a call for men to rise above the stagnation of close-mindedness and the paralysis of gullibility." This means that MLK wanted people to be more open-minded, and now believe the “half-truths, prejudices, and false understandings” and have a view of their own rather than follow the crowd.

When King led the bus boycott in 1955, he challenged that Montgomery government for change. He forced them to consider segregating the bus system by leading all African-Americans to stop using the buses. This suggested positive change without violence and risking lives, because the people involved in the boycott were not breaking the law.

He faced uproar from the officials and those who didn’t agree with his view, but he kept fighting against segregation until he died. He was arrested in 1963 and sent to jail for protesting in Birmingham, Alabama. His assassination on April 4, 1968 shocked the world. There were rumours that the man who assassinated MLK, James Earl Ray, was associated with the Ku Klux Klan, who had previously sent King a death threat.

What was MLK Jr.'s worldview and faith? Who/What was he inspired by?

Martin Luther King Jr. had a very similar worldview to his father. His father change both of their names from Michael King to Martin Luther King because he was so inspired by Martin Luther. MLK stood for civil rights, non-violence, and equality. His parents and children helped inspire him to do everything that he did. He came from a Christian/Baptist faith, just like his father, Martin Luther King Sr., who was an American pastor and he encouraged his son to be active in the civil rights movement that he was already a part of. MLK Jr. was a young pastor himself. MLK Jr.’s worldview was that nobody should be judged by the colour of their skin, and violence is not the answer. The worldview at the time was that white people were better than black people and protesters were violent animals. MLK’s ‘dream’ was that the United States would be void of any racism or racial segregation. This belief that all races are equal drove him to lead the Bus Boycott of 1956, and after this victory he became president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957. He has been described as an “extremist of love”.

The thing I found most inspiring about Martin Luther King Jr. is that he had all odds against him but he didn’t let any of it stop him. I was really amazed and inspired by the fact that he made his statement and caused so much change without harming anyone or using violence. He made his dream into a reality and he actually put in the work to make a difference to the world. He had a strong will and lots of perseverance. The amount of time and effort that MLK put into organising marches and peaceful protests shows his character and how dedicated and serious he was about making a difference in the world. MLK saw everyone as equals and saw past skin colour which many people of his time did not. He always respected everybody, even if they weren’t on his side. He took to sharing his values with the world to make it a better place for everyone. His moral standard is truly inspiring and he believed that he could give a clear message in a peaceful way. He has been a staple in modern society and it’s worldview.

MLK actually plagerised his doctorate degree when he was studying. That’s one of the biggest known things about him and it’s false. People believed him because he was educated, and had a doctorate degree. He was put at the forefront of the early Civil Rights Movement because of his impressive education credentials.
