08.10.2016 - UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON OPEN

On the 8th of October, I went to my first university open day down at Brighton. Brighton is a very creative university and I thought I would look around at their Film and Screen course, a course that not most universities. A train journey that's not too hard and not a lot of money - I spent £27.90 to go there and come back.

This course is 80% theoretical as it focuses a lot on the history of film and screen however you do get to choose a sub-course within the second year of the course that can be more practical than your first years. A lot of the student have found this course very good and enjoy it a lot, they enjoy the teachers, community and the location as it host a lot of film festival, encourages creativity throughout the time you are at the university and it isn't too far from London. The course has a lot of talks around the media basis such as video games, television, online media, youtube, netflix etc.

Personally, I don't mind that this isn't too practical but that the area itself host a lot of jobs/opportunities for the students to create things and have it shown to the public and most of the student graduates ended up working in the media industry.

Most of the graduates at this university have ended up working within the media industry but not as much as Ravensbourne.

15.10.2016 - UNIVERSITY OF RAVENSBOURNE OPEN DAY

On the 15th of October, I went to Ravensbourne university open day with Sam, Jessica, Raine, Jeremy and Hadeed. They all ended up meeting together and going to the university whereas, I went alone as this university was closer to home than Brighton.

This was a 10 minute train journey with only two train changes and the talk was roughly an hour. This university is near the O2 arena in North Greenwich, a very remotely modern suburban area.

The course we all looked Digital Film Production. The course is very practical and offers a lot for the student compared to Brighton university. Over the 3 years of the course you are required to have 40 films produced, most of them being short films - it is very intense course. A lot is needed to be in the course: 1000 people end up applying, 350 people manage to go through to interviews and only 100-150 students get in. It isn't a big university which is why there are limited spaces.

While being at this university, one thing that stood out to me was how helpful and passionate the teachers are towards the student that they sent two students to Berlin to film one of their projects. Many graduates after have ended up working within the media industry, receiving awards and worked in big films such as Tarzan, Bridget Jones Diary etc. which was quite reassuring considering my plans after college and maybe after university is to work around the media industry.

15.11.2016 - UCAS : DESIGN YOUR FUTURE.

On the 15th of November, I had a class trip to go to London's ExCel for the UCAS - DESIGN YOUR FUTURE exhibition.

I traveled alone meeting up with the class as we looked around at the different universities that were there.
I looked at University of Bradford, West London, Goldsmiths and more.

The subject/course that I am most interested in is Film. Most of the universities that I went to had a really good course for film in their own different ways especially Bradford. It stood out to me the most because they get to work with the industry such as ITV and the BBC and in exchange for having the university working with the companies they will give them some of the students so that they can experience working within the industry.

Personally, I am looking for a university that is outside of London because I will like to experience being financially independent and living on my own for a few years. I would also like to experience the university life style too.

I have been to a few open days for different universities and the ones that have opened my eyes to actually going to the universality are:

1. University of Brighton
2. University of Ravensbourne
3. University of West London
4. Goldsmith University
5. University of the arts of london.

One of the main things that I am looking for in a university is being somewhat outside of London and having good connection within the media industry.

The universities that I have looked at so far all have good communication and links within the industry which is good as most of the graduates end up working within the first 6 months from graduating.

On the 1st of December, a few of my classmates and I organized a private tour for their media department with one of the staff members at the university which we met through a ucas open day event. His name was Lee and he gave us his card to give to our teacher Howard. Howard set up this interview and we all scheduled a time and date to go and look at the university.

I went alone to the university but met up with Jessica, Jeremy and Brad. There was suppose to be more people but they had other stuff to do that they (on our off day from college).

The university is a place where a few of my old secondary school friends go to and I was hearing a lot of good reviews about it from them and when I got there I found it to be quite amazing. We were only a few minutes late due to some of us not knowing how to get there but the start was very nice.

We met up with our tour guide from the ucas open day event and he showed us around and introduced us to one of the staffs in the media department called Nick. He was very nice and informative about what the university had to offer and what you would do, as a student, if you were to come to the university. We met up with a few students, one of which is doing her MA degree and was editing a short documentary series based on a man who owns a garage in her local area. It was quite interesting to see a student at work, using their facilities. The teachers and some of the lectures are from the industry which I find to be very helpful and good because you can get a bit of experience of what is happening and how they were able to get in it in the first place.

Personally, I thought that I wasn't going to like the university as much but when we were being shown around the different facilities and what you can do in the university and within your course, I found it to be at the same level as Brighton university.
