After finishing reading Ben Ratliff’s book, “Every Song Every, Twenty ways to listen in an Age of Musical Plenty, I was left with many thoughts in mind. My main response to it was, “wow, how do people come up with these things from listening to a simple song?” The book itself was wired in general. It discussed musical elements that I didn't even know were a thing such as “the single note,” “transmission,” and “repetition.” Each chapter begins with a hook, something that you, the reader, can easily understand. He then continues by connecting such concept to music, this is where it gets confusing and weird because what Ratliff argues does not apply to everyone; well, at least not every concept discussed in this book. Concepts such “the single note” can be argued to be correct because a single note must have a greater and deeper meaning in comparison to an ordinary note. However, concepts such as transmission, can be argued otherwise because this depends on the initial intentions of the artist when composing the song, which is much more complex to understand. Having said so, Ben Ratliff’s book has semi changed the way I listen to music as I now the meaning behind repeated notes or single notes. However, beyond these elements, I find Bet Ratliff’s arguments to be more of opinions rather than facts.
