Knowing my boundaries

I found an article where an experienced teacher received a question from from her student teacher on how to draw the fine line between being a friend and teacher to the students. The experienced teacher provides a list of explanations on how to maintain professionalism and the types of things a teacher must not do to avoid any accusations or wrongdoings when it comes to a teacher getting to know their student. The teacher provided tips on how to ensure both yours and the students safety when it comes to having private conversations with a student.

http://successfulteaching.blogspot.com/2011/04/fine-line-between-friend-and-teacher.html

This article is very relevant to me as I have the exact same question being a pre-service teacher. This article taught me to be extremely careful with the way I speak to my students. I must ensure to speak about appropriate topics and not to mention anything inappropriate such as social events that i attend to or joke about certain things that are related to drugs, alcohol or sex related.
I have also learnt ways to ensure safety of myself and the student when it comes to speaking about personal things. If I needed to speak to a student about a certain thing or vice versa, I should try speaking to them about it in the hallway or if it is in a classroom I should leave the door opened so that there is always an exit opened for both parties to leave comfortably. The article teaches me that I can form good relationships with my students just as long that I am cautious of what I do and say. As a teacher, the article does teach me to be vigilant of my students wellbeing. If I feel a student is not coping well or is in danger, I should refer them to the councillor or report the matter if needed to be. I also learnt that it is crucial to discipline students when they have done or said something wrong as they may think they can get away with it by having a good relationship with their teacher. Which is why, as a teacher you must know when to the draw the line and act upon situations accordingly regardless of the type of relationship you have with your students. The very last thing any teacher would want is to have any serious allegations towards them over any type of misconduct and thus, this article has helped inform me that I can still have a good relationship with my students as long I act accordingly as a teacher and do not do or say anything inappropriate that could put me and my job in jeopardy.

Importance of being friendly and approachable to students

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mZLwLIUUCo

This youtube video I found was based on a reporter questioning a teacher on his perspective on the amount of friendliness a teacher should have with their students and when and how to draw the line. The teacher is a firm believer that teachers can and should be friends with their students so that that they seem approachable and students will be more likely to come forward when facing issues or have any ideas or contributions to the class. The teacher also suggests while we remain friendly to the students, being teachers we should always make aware to the students that there is a line they should not cross. The reporter questions the teacher how he would draw the line without coming across aggressive or without actually saying 'I don't want too be too close to you'. The teacher confidently advises to approach the students in a gentle manner and to advise the student to watch their behaviour as it is inappropriate. The video also suggests that students now a days are often connected with their teachers on social media such as Facebook however, teachers must be very cautious when it comes to things like this as there have been cases where teachers post inappropriate content resulting in students and their parents seeing it which may get reported and could possibly put the teachers job at risk.

This video reiterates to me that being friends with my students is okay. Since it is a new social norm to have students being connected with their students on social media, I have learnt to be extremely considerate of the type of content I post. As at the end of the day, I take responsibility on how I influence my students whether that is online or in class. It would not be ideal to post something inappropriate where my students and their parents can see it and use it against me or even worse, lose my job for it. The video also signifies the importance of drawing that line with students when they are inappropriate. I have learnt it is better to be calm and collected when it comes to disciplining or warning them rather than being aggressive and making the student's feel like I don't want to be anywhere near them. Ultimately, it is very beneficial if I have close friendships with my students as it makes the classroom environment more engaging and closer however, I must be able to be verbal and speak out when the line has been crossed.

No valid reason to discuss students personal problems or counsel students in private

Based on this article I found the writer expresses their research and findings on the amount of cases of teacher misconducts particularly through online. The writer essentially speaks about how most communication now a days is through online between teacher and student's and thats where it can get out of hand. The writer suggests that communication online is generally a positive thing and is an effective learning support as that is the new social norm. However, the writer believes this is also how teacher misconduct starts as students often get too comfortable and when they start talking about their personal matters online revolving that are inappropriate that is when the teacher can face serious consequences. The writer does go onto providing multiple advice to do with maintaining a safe and positive environment online with the students providing there are boundaries that must not be breached.

https://search-proquest-com.ezproxy.lib.rmit.edu.au/docview/2052776329?accountid=13552&rfr_id=info%3Axri%2Fsid%3Aprimo

From this article, I have learnt the severity of consequences that can happen when misconduct happens particularly online. The advices I have learnt from the writer consists of keeping all social media interactions school activity based only. Any content or messages that i may receive in the future that are not school related in any type of way must be reported to my superiors which in my case would be my mentor. I have also taken on board to always attach another adult that may be another teacher or students parents when posting something online. All in all, the article highlights that the reoccurrence of teacher having inappropriate relationship with students is typical which is why I must be extremely professional and aware of the type of things I do or say to my students particularly when it comes to online.

After reading the articles and watching the video, I have noted down many things that I will be keeping my eye out for when on placement.
I will be looking out on how close my mentor maintains their relationship/friendship with their students and see what type of actions from the students that will break the boundaries causing the teacher to discipline them. I will also be observing how my mentor goes on to disciplining the students particularly their tone and body action towards the student. I will also observe the type of content my mentor posts with their students and see how they respond to certain comments or messages that involve a student.
