2001 - iPod

One of my first memories of media technology was the original iPod shuffle. When going out for runs, my dad swore by these, as they weren’t too bulky so were perfect for transporting around. In terms of music devices before the iPod it consisted of mp3 players and Walkman’s, all devices in which you could only play one certain album at the time. The thing which made the iPod so revolutionary was the fact you could play an endless amount of songs from a huge range of albums. The device was also fairy easy to use, you could purchase albums or songs or even transfer a CD onto a computer and transfer it onto the iPod, a typically easy process to do. Not only this, but it only contained a click wheel and five buttons (the volume button working by moving your finger against the wheel, clockwise for louder and anti- clockwise for quieter), making it a very simple device for anyone to use.

2004 - Nintendo DS

Although founded in 1889, arguably one of Nintendo’s most famous creations was the Nintendo DS. Before invented, gaming devices consisted of a remote control attached to the console. The Nintendo DS was a device made with two screens, meaning that a player could focus on the first person angle on one screen whilst playing a game, as well as a whole other fields on the other. Because the game had wireless connectivity, people could play in groups whilst still using their own devices. Not only this, but it meant you could transport the device and play wherever you wanted. Despite the fact nearly all gaming devices were targeting for ‘gaming’ audiences (meaning only people that could play stereotypical video games and/or will be interested in them would be able to play) the Nintendo DS provided a range of different games to a very wide audience. An example of this is a game called ‘Brain Training’. Given as a Christmas present one year, my Grandma used to play this game almost every day as a way of ‘training her brain’. As a person that would never usually play games, even younger, it made it evident how versatile the DS was. Similarly, I used to play child-friendly games such as Nintendogs ( a game created to buy and care for different breeds of dogs) and Cooking Mamma (a game which you could create and cook meals). There was plenty of games aimed for different ages and different likings, and the Nintendo DS definitely widened the target audience for the world of gaming.
The same as the iPod, the Nintendo DS was very simple and easy to use. Being only a young child, I was able to figure out how to use it relatively quickly and never struggled with using it.

2006 - The Wii

A couple years after the Nintendo DS was introduced , the Nintendo Wii was created. The Nintendo Wii seemed like other gaming devices, such as X-box and Playstation, however the differences were soon noticed. In comparison to the console usually having the control attached, the Wii included a remote in which had a wireless technology. Being wireless made the console physically engaging, which differed from the other devices already on the market in which usually consisted on playing sat down stationary. The Wii meant that you could include exercise into your gaming, with games such as Wii Fit, Wii sports and Just Dance. An example of this is a tennis game included in Wii Sports. You could pick up the remote and use it exactly like a tennis racket, with extra attachments to make it even more realistic.
The device itself made gaming a lot more family- friendly and social, making families chose to play the Wii together rather than a board game or other activity, especially since multiple people could join in, rather than the one person console. Another thing that made the Wii revolutionary was the fact that it wasn’t too expensive in comparison to other gaming devices on the market, meaning nearly everyone wanted to have one in their household.

2007 - The iPhone

Though not having an iPhone until the iPhone 4 came out, I can still remember the uproar of when it was first introduced. Though something similar was created in the 1990’s, being the first smart phone, had touchscreen, access to emails, a to-do list and faxing, the iPhone weighed a lot less, was much smaller and far cheaper. The iPhone was a combination of a camera, a phone and a gaming console, which could be all crammed into one device rather than having all three. Not only did it include these three, but it also consisted of an mp3 player (much like the iPod Touch), a GPS and had access to the internet. Many people saw it as a tiny pocket-sized computer, but far more easier to carry around.

2010- Instagram

One of the biggest media creations which has changed my life is Instagram. It started off as an app in which you could share photos to post to your followers (consisting of mostly close friends). Throughout the years I have seen that the app has changed massively. What used to be a fun app to share photos of irrelevant moments in life has now became something that is at the back of our minds constantly. As the years went on, the pressure to start having a literally ‘picture-perfect’ life became more and more apparent. Internet professionals known as ‘Influencers’ became a new job, and such thing started putting new pressures on society to look, dress and act a certain way in order to ‘fit in’. The newly created form of social media created a new way for bullying to commence, making the app a negative environment to be in.

Although there is a lot of negatives to Instagram, the app also have many positives. It changed the way in which people travel, giving new inspiration for places to go (of course Instagram worthy). The app also became a place for new brands to arise and also build up already created ones. Activism is also a huge positive, as it spreads an awareness around social media and invites new audiences to support or be against certain topics.
