    Plath provides images of cleansing in this chapter. The first is the bath, a baptism into pureness. This is a cleansing which leaves Esther feeling holy and ready for a new life. Later on there is another sign, the book of short stories. Short story writing will be Esther’s next focus. The poisoning is also symbolic. Going to New York is supposed to be good for her career. Instead, it contributes to her breakdown.

    She returns to the doctor and shows no signs of improvement. The doctor decides she will need shock therapy. 
    Esther thinks about commiting suicide and running away to Chigaco, in order to avoid undergoing shock therapy.

    She says that Esther will DECIDE to get better. As if it is a option.

    She compares herself with a picture of a dead woman.

     Tried to slit her wrists, but failed. After, again she considered. However, give up.

    She thinks about drowning herself in the ocean, she goes back at night to commit suicide. The water was too cold so she gave up

    Esther gets some insulin shots.
    She meets Valerie, a girl in the asylum that got a lobotomy. 
    "I would be sitting under the same glass bell jar, stewing in my own sour air"- She can't feel anything and continues to feel empty in every situation.
