This was his first theory, held from 1913-1921. He believed that words can only describe objects in the world and their relationships. This theory allows our words to pass along mental “pictures” of situations to each other reliably. However it is then believed that any use of words that doesn’t picture a state of affairs in the world is meaningless
- So overall we cannot meaningfully discuss religion, ethics, art, etc

This theory was held from 1929-1952, it was created after he decided his previous theory was too limiting. He instead decided that we use language in many ways, in order to achieve many communicative goals, (EX: joking, informing, flirting, comforting, arguing, etc.), but each of these uses depends on social context.
- The “rules” or “logic” of language vary, therefore they can never be universally defined

Overall, Wittgenstein had a very functional and postmodern approach to language. He didn't think that language statements were either 'true or false'. He instead believed that they just held a lot of meaning. He also believed that language was part of a 'game', and that there are many different games for different people.

The article then brings up Wittgenstein, and what they think he would say about this situation. Wittgenstein was already fascinated enough by how humans can share the meanings of words and communicate with each other. So the author believes explains that Wittgenstein would be even more fascinated with how humans communicate while being fully isolated.

Overall, I do believe that Wittgenstein would be facilitated with how humans use language to communicate with each other in isolation during COVID. However, we can use his second theory, which is the game theory of language. Because during this quarantine, we are using language " in order to achieve many communicative goals".
