If using balls, make sure to put saran wrap on it beforehand. Then, after completion, cut it in half, remove the ball, and reattach the paper mache mold.
-Develop craft: I had to look at how long and thick other people made their strips of newspaper for their paper mache. Then, I had to cut my own, making sure they were all mainly the same size. I also had to research how to do paper mache entirely, which is a new technique for me to use.

I know how much paste I have to add to each strip of newspaper to get it to stick correctly and securely. I have also become resourceful and used the excess glue from other strips to attach more without having to go straight into my paste.
-Envision: I have been planning how I want to make the other planets. It is taking too long to complete this planet, and it will be quicker to get the project done on time if I decrease the size of the other planets.
-Stretch and Explore: I learned while doing the first layer of paper mache that you have to add a decent amount of paste if you want the strips of newspaper to stick the whole way. You also have to add a few layers if you want a secure piece that won't come apart easily.

-Finished the final layer paper mache
-Engage and Persist: I was having difficulty continuing to do the paper mache. It took a lot of time and effort to do one planet, so I think I may not be doing any more paper mache planets. It will take too much time and I won't be able to get the project finished in time if I try it.
-Observe: The paper mache isn't always sticking to itself. It takes a lot of paste to get the newspaper strips to stick, and even then the strips don't stick very securely. I learned that paper mache isn't my strong suit, and that I should get some practice before undertaking a big project like this with paper mache. Next time, I will do some smaller pieces before starting the final piece.

I decided that it would be easier to find another way to make the planets that I could do outside of school. I also still wanted to find something that would be less time-consuming that paper mache.
-Reflect: I haven't had any constructive criticism, but I figured out myself that paper mache is unrealistic if I want to get the project done on time. Instead, I looked up some alternatives to doing paper mache and I think I will instead use balloons filled with rice to model the planets and then paint them accordingly.

-I started painting the space backdrop to my planets because I wanted to take a break from the paper mache
-Observe: I really enjoyed painting the space backing for my installation. The blending of pink, blue, and purple makes very interesting shades and color combinations, and I like using a technique I used previously for making stars. You have to add a decent amount of water to a brush covered in white paint, and then run your fingers through the brush and flick the paint towards the paper. However, you also need to make sure that you don't drip water on the paper, because the white paint will stay behind even if you wipe up the water.

-Had to remake my planets from scratch
-Engage and persist: I originally wanted to do paper mache for my planets, but it was too time-consuming. I instead wanted to use balloons and rice to make weighed-down planets, but the shapes weren't right and the balloons wouldn't work with the acrylic paint I used. Instead, I bought paper laterns and painted them to look like the planets. They worked much better, and they didn't require a lot of struggle with hanging them up or assembling them.
-Express: The laterns still express the ideas of planets. Although they aren't as round as paper mache planets would be, they are painted accordingly and resemble the surface of the planets. They are also hanging in the right order from the ceiling, so people will know which planet is which.

-Content: My installation represents space and the nine main planets of our system. I wanted to do a space-themed installation for my project, and since I enjoyed painting the galaxy pattern in previous projects from other art classes, I thought that this would be a good way to do that again. I also wanted to do a piece that had to do with the planets since I had never considered doing anything involving them before. My installation is interactive because people can sit under the planets and within the space backdrop on the bench. It is significant because people will be able to notice the differences between the nine planets.
-Craftsmanship: I used acrylic paint to make both the space backdrop and the patterns on the planets. I used a splattering technique for the stars of the backdrop and a dabbing, mixing technique for the galaxy pattern. I made blended stripes and spots for the patterns on the lanterns and the balloon that I used for the planets. I used acrylic paint because I knew it would be easy to mix colors with and to layer when I made the stars. I challenged myself by using paper mache at first, but it was too time-consuming to continue. I then used paper lanterns instead, and focused more on the patterns and colors of the planets. It was also difficult to get the space backdrop to stay up on the wall. I made the piece unique through my use of paper lanterns and a balloon as the planets, and with the way I did the galaxy pattern on the space backdrop.
-Discoveries: I discovered that I am not very good in anticipating how long something is going to take me time-wise. I didn't leave myself enough time to continue paper mache, and that left very little time to change plans once I hit a road block. I need to leave myself more time for possible error. I also learned that I enjoy blending colors with acrylic paint, especially when I am trying to create texture with them.
-Alterations: I would add more of the space backdrop to the wall behind the bench, and I would have taken a bit more time to perfect how the planets look and the colors I used on them.
