Upbringing also has a lot to do with who we become/ are because if you someone were to live in a dangerous neighborhood that person might grow up to be less trusting and more cautious of their surroundings and others opposed to someone who lives a better area is going to be less cautious and more gullible.

I do think that the actions of the adults who raise us influence our goals, values, and our personality. If the mother and father were taking care of their children, then the children usually become good individuals. It can be the opposite if the parents were ill-kind to their children. Of course, outside influences can affect our way of thinking, like friends or popular media. Our upbringing is the reason why we are the way we are.

The Poem by Kahlil Gibran connects to the familial relationships in Things Fall Apart by focusing on the character, Okonkwo. This relates to the topic because Okonkwo’s father, Unoka, was basically a lightweight when it came to leadership and as a father, making Okonkwo deviate from his father. This Father-Son relationship would repeat itself with Okonkwo’s eldest son, Nwoye, who thinks the same about his father in a different way.

The bow represents the parent and the arrow represents the son or daughter. When the archer nochs and releases the bowstring, shooting the arrow, it shoots the arrow at it’s target. It can either miss or hit its target. Now let’s replace the bow and arrow with the parent and its offspring, it represents how the offspring is now old enough to go by itself, so the parent should release the offspring into the wild for it is now independent. Gibran uses this metaphor of the bow and arrow because both the bow and the parent is releasing what was once theirs to control.
