Tragedy Of The Commons

"The tragedy of the commons" is the interpretation of the circumstances in which the overuse or overexploitation can lead to the depletion of shared natural resources and endanger not only the human beings but every single creature on earth. It was first developed in 1968 by Garret Hardings who suggested three (03) approaches to get a rid of this overexploitation: privatisation, state ownership and communal ownership. Some global solutions have been proposed by the United Nations such as the Kyoto Protocol (1997), which was unfortunately difficult to implement because, if we are all citizens of the earth planet we come from different countries and each country is pursuing its own individual goals.

Tragedy of The Commons

The tragedy of the commons is a phenomenon of public resources shortage caused by people's blind pursuit of short-term self-interest. This phenomenon can lead to many social and environmental problems, such as overgrazing, overfishing, overpopulation and air pollution. Therefore, in order to save the collective interests damaged by individual interests, relevant social contracts, public agreements and legal bills need to be formulated and implemented.

Tragedy of The Commons.

It was first described by economists in 1833. Under the limited natural resources, overgrazing and overfishing will pollute the air, population pollution and a series of other social problems, which is very bad for people's living environment. The important thing is that in the long run, short-term self-interest is not good for human beings. For example, littering, deforestation, traffic jams, buying bottled water, using plastic bags are very bad behaviors. Coal mining and combustion, will also cause air pollution, and will continue for a long time.
