I walk this path every day to get to work. As you can see, it is very uneven, and I have absolutely tripped walking on this on my way to work. Although it might be aesthetically pleasing, I think the accessibility makes it very difficult for people who use a wheelchair or crutches. The uneven surface could even be unsafe for kids who might be running or riding their bikes. Across the street is a school, so I know kids take this route to get to where they're going.

This daycare is another place that I pass along my route to work. What caught my attention was the "Slow Down, Kids Playing" sign, as well as the gate surrounding the building. Both of these things indicate that the kids' safety is the priority, especially in the area where I work. I'm glad this sign is here because people often speed in this area. As I passed the daycare, I could hear kids screaming and playing outside. It sounded like they were having a good time.

What drew me to take this picture was the sign indicating a bike route. One thing I love about the city of Denver is the extensive bike routes that are available everywhere downtown. Not everyone has a car, so it's nice to have an individual bike lane that protects people from vehicles passing by. Many of my friends have bikes or skateboards to get around, so it makes me feel better knowing that the city cares about their safety and prioritizes people's other forms of transportation.

Although Denver is known for its beautiful murals, this alleyway with graffiti tends to be the prime hangout spot for homeless people. This is right across from where I work. They aren’t here today, but almost every day, there is someone down there with a stolen shopping cart filled with miscellaneous things, or someone high on God knows what drug. Unfortunately, the area that I work in has its rough moments.

Right across from where I work is a gas station that is very convenient when I need to stop on the way home, but sadly, this is another hub where I frequently see homeless people. Gas stations in general can be very unsanitary, but this one in particular is pretty dirty in the inside. If I have to go in at any point, I usually try to go with a friend just so that I am not going in alone. In this picture, you can also see city scooters and bikes.

Day 1

This is the building where I work! It’s across from the gas station. I wanted to capture this photo because, although my building is not in the nicest area, we have a gate with reserved parking for our guests. To enter our building, we either need to present our badge or enter the security code. We also have a ramp as well as two accessible parking spots. Another thing I noticed is that in the same photo of the ramp, there are two chairs and a table, allowing anyone to eat their lunch outside while enjoying the beautiful weather.

I work in a two-story building that is relatively new. There is both stair and elevator access. The inside of Colorado Ballet's building typically smells like cleaning products until you step inside a ballet studio, where it then smells like feet and body odor. Usually, you will hear beautiful classical music playing. My work environment is clean in some areas, but can be unsanitary in others. I will show more of my work environment on a different day.

This is a photo of the physical therapy room at Colorado Ballet. My work environment can be very stressful, but our physical therapy room feels safe and calm. It's not only a room where people work on their strength and conditioning, but also a safe space to decompress from our day. The pt room can get a little messy and unsanitary, but for the most part it is a clean healthy environment. This room promotes positivity amongst the dancers because it plays an integral role in shaping Colorado Ballet’s company. Here at Colorado Ballet, our health team is one of the leading teams in the ballet world because we have access to four physical therapists, three doctors, a pilates instructor, a physical trainer, a massage therapist, and a mental health therapist. I am very grateful to be in a job that considers my psychological and bodily well-being.

Colorado Ballet has three different water dispensers. One in which is clean and filtered. I see this as a luxury because some work environments are not as fortunate. Access to clean water is critical to a community’s health because it directly affects our nutrition and overall well-being. Clean water helps prevent waterborne diseases, and as a dancer, because we are very active, I rely on clean water to get me through the day.

There are several different photos of the female bathroom and dressing room here at Colorado Ballet. Most of the time when I walk into our dressing rooms, there is a disgusting sewage smell that encompasses the entire space. Sewage smells can indicate a backup in the sewer system, exposing us to harmful pathogens. This can absolutely affect the quality of living/working environment because it makes people sick, and even worse, contributes to asthma. Other than the sewage smell and the toilet paper on the ground (which I will not be using), our bathrooms are typically clean, considering how many dancers share this space.

Day 2: Street parking and Traffic Safety

After reviewing the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) Community Health Assessment concerning street parking and overall traffic, I decided to take a video of the street where I parallel park every day for work. This road often becomes very busy, and although I didn’t film the other side, there are residential homes to the right where we park, creating a congested and unsuitable situation for the residents. Unfortunately, not all dancers have access to the Colorado Ballet’s parking lot, which forces many of us to find street parking in the surrounding area.

Walking from these parking spots can feel unsafe due to local crime and heavy traffic, including speeding. There have already been two serious incidents involving Colorado Ballet employees who were hit by vehicles while taking the same route that many of us must walk each day to get to work. Both incidents resulted in significant injuries and long recovery times.

According to the CHA, the City of Denver recognizes existing shortcomings in parking access and traffic safety and is working to create a safer, more efficient environment. Similarly, Colorado Ballet has expressed a long-term goal of expanding its parking lot so that all employees can park safely on site, decreasing risk and improving daily safety for staff and dancers.

https://www.denvergov.org/Government/Agencies-Departments-Offices/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory/Public-Health-Environment

Day 2 Colorado Labor Law Postings

After walking around my community, specifically where I work, I noticed something new! The Colorado Labor Law postings are above our two water fountains. The fact that they have these laws posted on the wall means that they are very transparent in complying with these standards. When considering the decisions around diversity, equity, and inclusion at the federal level, state, and/or local levels that affect your community, I think about this Colorado Labor Law posting located at the heart of our building. At the bottom right of the posting, it states explicitly that Colorado prohibits discrimination of any kind in employment, whether it be disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, age, national origin or ancestry, marital status, or in some situations, marriage to a coworker. These DEI decisions shape who has access to jobs and who is represented in leadership positions, which in turn affect the economic health and social well-being of this community. I have to say that Colorado Ballet’s organization does an incredible job at elevating this community's standards. Colorado Ballet has provided over 500 people with access to exceptional ballet training and continues to support the overall health of the community.

Schools provide a structured environment where all children, no matter race, ethnicity, or background, can obtain education, resources, and opportunities. Schools also teach kids fundamental human rights and critical thinking, which can help them challenge social inequities and, in turn, create a fairer society.
