         <title>What is Melanoma?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Melanoma is a form of cancer that develops in skin pigment cells called melanocytes and it is the most serious type of skin cancer.<br><br>Causes of melanoma<br>The exact cause is not known but is said to be caused by ptolonged exposure to ultra violet sun-rays. But not all melanomas are caused by UV exposure.<br>Exposure to tanning lamps and beds increases the risk. Also, family history and genetic factor is a risk.<br><br>Signs and symptoms<br>- A change in an existing mole<br>- Development of a new pigmented or unusual looking growth on skin.<br>It can develop anywhere in the body but most often in the area that has most exposure to the sun such as legs, back, arms and face. But there can be hidden melanomas  like in the palms, nail bed or sole of feet.<br><br>Diagnosis<br>Physical Examination- Changes in skin and moles<br>X-rays, CT scans and PET scans<br>Biopsy of the affected skin .<br><br>Treatment<br>Treatment for melanoma depends on the stages. Surgery can be done for thin melanomas.  For advanced melanomas radiotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy is done.</div>]]></description>
