Ginger is probably Beauty's closest friend, and certainly the horse he spends the most time with over the course of the book.

The main message Sewell attempts to portray through Black Beauty is that animals feel pain just as humans do, so abusing animals very unacceptable. However, as she demonstrates in the book, this practice is still being widespread. All of the trials and torture which Black Beauty and his friends have to bear, the pain of the first breaking-in process, the unnatural feel of the bit in one’s mouth and the saddle on one’s back, the torturous check rein, the struggle of pulling overloaded carts and injustice of getting whipped despite one give’s ones best efforts. All of these are examples of abuse which the horses of the story face and which are widespread in society throughout the story and in real life.

The author describes the driving conditions and tack that was cruel to the horses. For example, Black Beauty says, "Beyond the turnpike was a long piece of road, upon which fresh stones had just been laid- large sharp stones, over which no horse could be driven quickly without risk of danger. Of course my shoeless foot suffered dreadfully; the hoof was broken and split down to the very quick, and the inside was terribly cut by the sharpness of the stones" (page 132). With this use of imagery, the reader understands that the stones were very sharp and they cut into Black Beauty's hoof very deep and this shows that the driver didn't show any care for Beauty.

The mood in the novel Black Beauty is very dull and depressing at times. Black Beauty is abused by many of his owners and he witnesses other horses being abused too. Black Beauty has to see Ginger get abused and it makes the reader feel sympathy for him that he has to see his best friend Ginger getting abused by their cruel owners. For example, in the novel, Black Beauty says, "A short time after this a cart with a dead horse in it passed our cabstand. The head hung out of the cart tail, the lifeless tongue was slowly dropping with blood; and the sunken eyes! But I can't speak of them, the sight was too dreadful" (page 223). The author sets the mood as depressing by describing the dead horse. The author was describing the effects of a horse working too hard for too long. Black Beauty couldn't even look at the horse because the sight was so miserable.

For example, Black Beauty says, "Those who have never had a bit in their mouths cannot think how bad it feels; a great piece of cold hard steel as thick as a man's finger to be pushed into your mouth" (page 11).

I didn't highly enjoy this book. Throughout the chapters, it is usually very slow and boring. I believe this isn't the best book out there that you can read, but it does have some interesting and emotional moments in the book. I would recommend this book to others because the book gives an animal's point of view and shows that animals need care too. I know there will be people that love to read a story about a horse's life. Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

The story begins with the birth of a horse named Beauty on a wonderful farm in Victorian England. He is raised by his mother, Duchess, and are under the care of the kind Farmer Grey. Beauty learns that humans can be a horse’s greatest friend or a horse’s worst enemy depending on the situation. He begins to understand that not all horses are as lucky as he is. He spends the early part of his life well cared for and happy. Beauty is sent to Squire Gordon at Birtwick Park, where he spends some of the happiest years of his life. John Manly, a wise groom, cares for him, and he makes friends with the other horses there, including Ginger and Merrylegs. He has many adventures, including being ridden one night for a doctor to save Squire Gordon’s wife’s life. When Squire Gordon falls ill, he is instructed to move to a warmer climate. As a result, Squire Gordon sells all the horses on the estate. Beauty’s life takes a turn for the worst. He is sold to a series of owners who neglect him. One night, a drunk groom causes him to fall, killing the groom and causing Beauty's knees to be ruined. Beauty is no longer a fashionable horse, but simply a horse for hire. He is eventually sold to Jerry Barker, a very hardworking cab driver in London. Jerry was really excellent with horses. Although his life is hard, Beauty grows to love his work under the care of Jerry. Beauty is again sold to another series of owners who work him so hard he drops. He encounters Ginger again, who has been cruelly treated, so much so that she crumbles to the ground as Beauty watches her.. Beauty is nearly dead from work and injury, and goes through the process of being sold to several owners again. At the end of the book, a family who recognizes him as Squire Gordon’s beloved Black Beauty buys him and give him the life he deserves in his last years.
