Is cocoa farming good or bad?

I think that cocoa farming is bad because little kids are being taken away from their family and being sent to the cocoa farms and they are getting scratched up and injured because kids ages 5-16 have to carry around things like chain saws and it causes them to get hurt. Also they say that they are going to get money and most of the time they don't. They are also told that they are going to go back to their family but they really never get to go back to their family. In the article "Child Labor and slavery in the chocolate industry" (Document E) it says that "The children of western Africa are surrounded by intense poverty, and most being working at a young age to help support their family." This is bad because most kids should not start to work until they are 15-16 before that it should be their parents working.

I can't really decide on which side to take only (but I lean more of to the Good side) because if the country didn''t have this it would most likely not be as weathy. In addition in the Documentary it seemed as if the parents didn't want their children since they come from such a long way like as I think they said she was from 🤬. One the bad side their are very simple solutions like making roadblocks or adding fences so that the abduction doesn't continue. It seems as if the government from the Ivory Coast doesn't care if they wanted they could add a rule which makes it so the kids won't be abducted as well. I also think that the Philipines could become the #1 producer which would hurt the Ivory Coast production of the pods.

I think that coca farming for the Ivory coast is not a good thing The fourth human right (No slavery). They violate it because they use children as enslaved workers. This should be addressed by better enforcement of the rule about child labor. or government officials actually monitoring the coca farms. I found that the fact that the child workers do not get paid very interesting, because the traffickers promise the kids they'll be paid. One question I have: do the kids actually have a choice to work or not?
I learned that they put banana tree leaves to use in coca farming (from the video where the farmers taste chocolate).

Is Cocoa Farming Good Or Bad?
I think that Cocoa Farming is bad for the Ivory Coast. I think that it is bad becuase there is ALOT of child labor going on and kids as young as 5 Years old have to work long hours on the Cocoa Fields. Kids are also not getting the propor education that is needed for them. In the article "The future of Chocolate: Why cocoa production is at Risk" , it states "Their communities have poor education and healthcare services and lack electricity" This piece of evidence defnielty shows "The negative side of Chocolate" because every single kid deserves a good education and with all of this labor/slavery going on, the kids will never have a good enoug heducation and alos when they grow up and dont want to work there anymore it wil be very hard for them to find work with no education. Another bad thing is that many farmers are living in poverty becuase of their low income and that then becomes a very bad problem becuase they wont have as much stuff to provide to their family.

Questions
What Human Rights are being violated?
The human Rights that I think are being violated are the no slavery and the right to education becuase the labor is like slavery and the kids have no education.

What questions do you have?
Why do companies try for a while to help with the problem and then just drop out of helping especially with the child labor going on?

How do you think the negative issues with cocoa farming should be addressed?
I think thatg the companies that are helpign shoudl actually go to the Ivory Coastand actually see what is going on and try to help and after a month or something check on the progress of the \helping.

What have you learned about this topic or from the work you did in this mini-unit?

I have deifneitly learned al ot about the conditions of fafrmes and about the negtaive affects of cocoa farmign and about how and where the cocoa is made!

What Human rights are being violated by the cocoa industry and how are they violating them? Human Rights are being violated in the Ivory coast because they are violating the 4th Human right which is No Slavery. An article from Newsela called “A hard fight to end child labor abuse on West African cocoa farming” Has great quotes.”The World Cocoa Foundation, be never once mentioned the words "child labor," but the subject was on everyone's mind.” This quote shows how the Head of the Cocoa farming industry tries to sweep this big issue under the rug. The reason they do this is because the subject can bring them down when they are only looking to focus on profit.

One of the human rights being violated in the Ivory Coast is the right to education. According to the UN Declaration of Human Rights, “Primary school should be free. We should learn about the United Nations and how to get on with others. Our parents can choose what we learn.” This is being violated because parents don’t really have a choice, there children are being kidnapped, and taken away from their family because of money. The Ivory Coast is giving the families two choices: They can send their kids to school, but they have to learn to struggle in debt, and probably die of hunger, OR they can send their kids to work and manage to survive. Therefore, the parents are forced to pick one decision.

I think that the main issue with cocoa farming is the lack of competition from other cocoa companies. Consider this for a moment: If the Ivory Coast were to have 4 or 10 cocoa farms, the farmers would be always competing for better deals such as, more employee discounts, higher pay, and less child labor. The Ivory Coast would then on get more money, and have less and less kids working, and have employees earn more and more money per hour. So how to address this issue you may ask? Well all we need to do is send in more cocoa companies into the Ivory Coast. This way, the Ivory Coast would learn to deal with this situation on their own, rather then America dumping all their money into that country, plus lots of others.

I agree with what Eli said by going back to the Dark Side of Chocolate video and how the little girl said she is working by her choice.

In the Ivory Coast it is a poor country, and also a third world country which does not have many other jobs to do. However they are saying how it is bad for kids to be using dangerous tools while farming, but they are so used to it that it does not matter as much as it would for us to use the stuff we are used to.

To address this problem, I would do the same as other companies. In the article, ” The future of Chocolate:Why Cocoa productions are at risk.” says how companies are realizing this problem and helping with increasing money and how they see the changes in the money increasing for the farmers. And with this I feel like I would do the same.

I found interesting that these kids are being mature and knowing that they have to work to help their families. Also, farmers there have worked with Chocolate and for a lot of years but yet never tried it.

I have learned that in the world we have human rights. However, in countries those do not apply to them and they are being violated.

Cocoa Socratic Seminar

Question one- Do you feel cocoa is good for the Ivory Coast?

I think that cocoa is bad for the ivory coast. I feel like it is bad because children are forced to work in harsh climates, kidnapped/abducted from their families and get barely any education. From the Newsela Article “Cargill tries to improve conditions at West Africa’s cocoa farms” “Then there’s work that could harm children’s health and safety, such as spraying pesticides or wielding machetes.” This quote is showing that they are working in terrible fields that no one should be working in let alone children. They could get hurt or slowing damage the rest of their bodys with the pesticide without proper care of working on so. Another piece of text evidence is that they are kidnapped or abducted from their own homes. In the same newsela article “Cargill tries to improve conditions at West Africa’s cocoa farms”, “or worse, abducted and made to work without pay — have dogged the cocoa industry for more than a decade.” This quote is also showing that they are being forced to work, with no sy in the matter not even their parents can help what could happen. They get no pay so they are forced to live off of what the place provides them, as for their family get nothing from it os they live without a child and without some of the pay from what the child is working from. The farms have dogged so many reports by now that since so, no one can or have done anything for those kids is these types of farms.

Question 2-What human rights are being violated by the cocoa industry and how are they violating them?

Well for example, the first one that I can think of is unfair detainment. I don't really have text evidence for it but have a good reasoning. The human right is putting the people who run these farms and want to work at no risk. No form example the kids working in these farms, have a different story. They can/are abducted from their family and treated like a slave. They are brutally punished by little food and water. The basic needs to survive. Another option that I do not have evidence for is slavery. I feel like these two are very ovis for example reasons, but can’t find a good text evidence for it. It is in Slavery by pulling them from family and getting no pay for the matter that they worked in.

Question 3- How do you think the negative issues with cocoa farming should be addressed?

I think the negative issues should be addressed with the fact that all of the problem they are making. Also, then what is happening to the larger factories and how it can lead to their own pay. Like in the article, “The numbers behind chocolate labor” (National Geographic) I had found a graph. I would, If i could be apart of this situation, go up to one of the largest frame that produces the cocoa and sgho them (this graph). The graph is showing that the do two parts of the process, as for all of the other countries do the rest, not those other countries get more pay than they do. Without you (Cocoa Farmer) We wouldn’t have chocolate. Then I would show them one of the articles about these kids and their working conditions, like this one from Newsela “Cargill tries to improve conditions at West Africa’s cocoa farms” “'Stop child labor on cocoa plantations or the world may stop buying your cocoa.' This means that your farms could go out of business because we all know that you are using child labor. We don’t support it as for we could easily reveal to the world what is happening. No one will buy the cocoa as for you would be responsible for putting out all of the other major collate business. You would get hurt as for all of the other people knowing about this will hate you and your country. Therefore, you should stop using these poor, poor children, and start with paying them and following the human rights as well. They might be kids, but they still have a life t olive and expersine without being harmed on your cocoa farm.

Question 4- What did you find or interesting from what you read about the cocoa industry?

I thought that how and why they use the kids for child labor. For example in the article “Is chocolate fair to eat?” “The reason is money. Extremely poor countries send children to work in other countries where cocoa beans grow. In exchange their government is paid.” This means that they are taking these kids because of how their money situation is working so they need more product,so they use kids to get all of that money.

Question 5- What questions do you have about the cocoa industry?

Why DO they still use children?

Do they really see the problem in using kids as workers?

Why do they take they kids and them give NO pay!?!?!

Question 6- What have you learned about this topic or from the work you did in this mini-Unit?

I have learned that this topic is such a horrible thing. These people are getting all of their human right violated, they are getting hurt and are working under bad conditions.they get no pay, their education is limited as well as they are kept in horrible climates.

I have learned that these kids are working long hours as well as being a victim of child slavery. 2.1 Million kids are working for child slavery. They are getting multiple places and component. %31 is GOOD for the cocoa brininess. Working in the factory's they are getting and breathing in toxic air, yes they might be working in and carrying machetes and dangerous weapons. part of the reason that they are working is that some of the family back home cant and are not working, so they send their kids off to these types of farms. the reason that they are using child labor, they need more money. Since they are not getting all of this money, they are getting these kids so that they an produce more of the money and cocoa beans. If you were to think about, that if there were more cocoa farms in the area, the condition get more and more rough as for then they are going to the money will go up and up, therefore leading to more money. The kids are not trapped. There is no fence, they could easy get out, as they are armed, they could take out a graud and 🤬 them. So then, they could get out.

They are working in unsafe conditions with dangerous tools like a machete. These gangrenous jobs leave them with scars all over their body. According to 'The Future of Chocolate' article "Their communities have poor education and healthcare services and lack electricity and decent sanitation, with water only available from community wells…" this means that not only are the cocoa farmers working in unsafe conditions, they are also aren't living in the best conditions. Kids can't get education because they are working, and they aren't able to go home and see their family often. This is why I feel that cocoa faring is bad for the Ivory Coast.

Important points to make:

People in the 1800s who were enslaved by people in the united states because of their race were eventually freed even though we made a profit from them running our farms. We did this because we realized it was wrong.

Cocoa is not their only option, if the people in the Ivory coast switched to palm oil and rubber they would be a lot better off then they are now. Although that may take a while it will help them out a lot. "Palm oil is important because it supports two million people [in Ivory Coast]," (Mr. Porquet, BBC article).

I can see how people say that chocolate farming is good but if it sacrifices the well being of others it’s not worth it. On top of that the people aren’t benefiting from it they are being tricked into something that isn’t going to feed their families or help them out.

People may even be better off without chocolate, although it tastes good it is one of the major factors that lead to obesity in the U.S and other countries across the globe. Chocolate is high in calories, sugar, and fat. And eating a lot of it will cause weight gain(wellsource, 2019). Not only does chocolate lead to weight gain but it also can lead to diabetes which unfortunately has killed people.

High supply of cocoa can drop the prices so people can buy more but then the cocoa farmers aren't getting paid as much as they should. “They have to sell their cocoa at prices dictated by the intermediaries. Another part of the problem is that cocoa farmers receive only a part of the world market price for beans, due to local trading structures, taxes and also the quality of the beans.”( European campaign for fair chocolate). Another thing that factors how much money they get is the votality of prices of cocoa. If they have a bad season and there aren’t many farmers selling the beans the farmers will get more money for their crops because there is higher demand. If there is a good season and many farmers are able to sell their crops then they end up with the bad side of the bargain. “While good seasons which produce good crops in the main cocoa producing countries lead to high supply and can bring about a fall in prices, poor crops caused by crop disease or bad weather conditions in some major regions lead to a low supply and can increase the price. Price changes can also be triggered by factors like food speculation. For speculators volatile prices are lucrative as speculative trading on futures markets can bring about big profits.”( European campaign for fair chocolate).

Do you feel cocoa is good for the Ivory Coast?

I feel like people should try to steer clear of the cocoa industry so we can focus on other jobs for the people of the Ivory Coast that are safer and are able to contribute to their wellbeing. One of the things that the constitution says is that we are all free and equal. Nobody should be kidnapped or sold to anybody for the profit of cocoa. In fact, you could land yourself in prison for that if you are caught.

What human rights are being violated by the cocoa industry and how are they violating them?

#1: “We should all be treated in the same way.” Some of these children are tricked into going to work on cocoa farms and they are typically neglected.

#4: ”No slavery.” Children are being stolen and kidnapped against their own will and against their parents permission.

#26: “The right to an education” Some children are unable to get an education because they don’t have the time to go to school and learn and they won't make enough money if they go to school.”

How do you think the negative issues with cocoa farming should be addressed?

I think that people should be given the option as to whether or not they want to go and work in the cocoa industry or move somewhere else and start a better life. People shouldn’t just be promised something like money when in reality they aren’t going to get it. These workers make less than $2 a day.

What did you find surprising or interesting from what you have read about the cocoa industry?

I was very surprised to find that this the people involved with the farming dont just move away and find a different job

What questions do you have about the cocoa industry?

Why wouldn’t anybody try to do anything about this and help these people out if they know whats going on?

What have you learned about this topic or from the work you did in this mini-unit?

I’ve learned a lot in this unit but this most important thing I’ve learned is that there are a lot of problems in this world (cocoa farming being one of them) and people need to start fixing them. It’s not ok to let people suffer for the benefit of others.
