The hardest part of the project was changing my lifestyle. After observing what I use and how much I use it and seeing how the different aspects of my life effects the world around me. Attempting to eat more naturally grown food from local places, reducing the amount pollution I produce from driving my truck, reducing the amount of water I use by trying to take shorter showers.

Sustainable suggestions?

Depending upon the level of commitment the person has to being more sustainable, I would suggest starting with small changes which will eventually lead into bigger ones. I would suggest carrying around a reusable bottle in place of using multiple plastic bottles, turning lights off when you leave a room, switching to LED light bulbs, carpooling when available, buying locally grown food. There are many ways, big and small, to take action to reducing your carbon footprint and those are just a few I would suggest as starters.

Overall Thoughts

Looking back on the project, I enjoyed it because it made me take a look at my choices and caused me to reevaluate my daily routine. Because of this project, I now actively try to reduce my carbon footprint. I am not going to go to the extent of biking to work or going vegan but I do try to eat less fast food, use less water, take the stairs instead of elevators, use reusable bags when grocery shopping, etc. I hope to continue to make small changes in my daily life which will impact the world around me. I believe if we focused on getting the majority to make few minor changes rather than getting the few to make many major changes, the earth would have a better chance at recovery. I thought it was interesting to be able to pinpoint where most of my footprint was coming from which allowed me to adjust my choices based off of that data. Likewise, it was fascinating to see how much energy each “daily task” used and to the extent simple tasks such as washing dishes, flushing the toilet, plugging in a laptop, etc. impacts the environment.

I think the easiest part of the ecological footprint project was probably seeing the changes that needed to be made after i collected the data. When I saw the data of my energy usage it was very easy for me to understand how i could save more energy and money.

I would tell them to watch their use of hot water, dryer, heater. Turn off anything you know you wont be using. Try to support brands that care about the environment like for example buying products that were made from recycled materials. Do not buy bottled water over tap water. Recycle if you can and when you can.
