Toddlers tend to use one word to ask a question or make a comment. An example of this is the word: More. The child may be asking to have more juice or food. The adult then would repeat to the child --More juice, please. This would help the child to build their language into short sentences to begin with.

You can read to a child one on one and this helps the child develop their language development. The adult can ask questions, provide comments on story that is being read, Use language to describe things on the page such as what the objects are and what is happening on the page you are currently reading. You can make this interesting as well by using different voice for different characters and also use different tones to help the child understand what is happening on the page you are reading such as excitement or sadness.

Use labels with pictures to show different objects that a child may describe as a ball. An example of this is -ball- this could be a ball or an orange and the child may still call it a ball. The adult would use the correct word to describe the orange. You could say that the orange is round like a ball but it is an orange that we eat and a ball we play with.

Toddlers ask lots of whats this questions. It is best to answer those in order to help them build their language skills. Use short sentences or words for descriptions.
