Artist Anne Zuhulka’s photography work," Cronulla, Jewel of the Shire" could potentially be an influence from her personal enjoyment and hobbies. Where she wanted to reflect on her memories and create art that is part of her culture and life events, as well as incorporating her personal beliefs and religion, expressing her freedom and rights through symbolism of the surfboard, clothing and sea. I appreciate her work as a reflection on her personal thoughts and how she believes life is in her perspective. In addition to this, the photograph could express how she feels socially, politically and religiously. The expression on her face portrays a serious mood in a relaxing environment depicting controversy between the mood and expressions.

Anne Zahalka artwork “Cronulla, Jewel Of the Shire” was produced between 2009/2011. The piece is a women standing in a full body swim suit with a surf board looking into the distance. She is wearing very dominant colour of blue and red. Behind her is the beach with the waves brushing up onto the shore. Above the women is lettering which says “Cronulla” and below saying “Jewwl of the shore” which is the name of the piece. Mrs Zahalka artwork has been influenced by her concerns of myths and culture, the purpose of this piece is to display how the women should be treated equally and shouldn’t be violate and not allowed to pursue their passion. Religion is relevant to this artwork as the piece has Arabic writing displayed underneath the surfboard and also on the women’s shirt, it is also significant because the artist is this race herself and the way she has captured the women and still respected the model religion is significant. I interpreted this artwork to be showcasing how a range of different cultures and gender should be treated with respect and not violated because they believe in a different religion.

The Cronulla, jewel of shire, 2009/2011 shows a young Muslim women posing against a white surf board in a semi- deserted Cronulla Beach. which indicates that they are addressing australian culture as this beach is located in NSW, this also indicates how different races enjoy the same hobbies/activities as anyone else. she is wearing brightly coloured ‘burqinis’. The girls pose , echoing the typical masculine stance of the lifesaver, and at the same time powerfully asserting their right to occupy this space. Anne Zahalka creates an image where “cultural identity is defiantly represented against a landscape marked by the memory of violence and intolerance.”

In Anne Zuhulka’s photograph, Cronulla, Jewel of the Shire, she expresses many cultural views and imageries.

The woman pictured is wearing a bathing suit, covering most of her body, and is holding a surfboard. She is standing at a beach in Cronulla, with a clear blue sky and small, rolling waves behind her. Cronulla is a suburb in NSW, and to the people there, the beach would be a significant part of their lives. By using Cronulla in the title, she is personalizing the work to the people who live there, the people who go to the beach in Cronulla, as well as for the people who have perhaps migrated to Australia, and now get to enjoy our beautiful country. I think the purpose of this work is to show the religious side of our culture in Australia, and comment on multiculturalism. The woman is wearing what I believe to be a hijab, which is worn by Muslim women, and is what some people may be afraid of. The artist has tried to show that Muslim women are not to be feared, and are relaxed, calm people, who enjoy many of the same things as other Australians. There is often a stigma that outsiders should be feared, but those fears are irrational, especially when you look at this woman who is calmly standing at the beach. The bathing suit also references culture from another country, and so includes not only Australian references, but also those of other countries. By including Australian imagery such as the beach and surfboards, the artist shows that this woman is an Australian, despite her religious background.

This work could be addressing multicultural bias’ people may have and the views they may have on the Muslim race. During this time period of 2011, war occurred overseas, this work could have been captured in order to break down the barriers of racism. The lady being at the beach shows to the viewers that different races have the same interests and hobbies to anyone else, it proves to people that race has no impact or restriction on what people can do. The viewer may change their interpretation and views on religion after seeing this image, their eyes may be opened to the range of things other religions are involved in.

“Cronulla” depicts a Muslim women wearing a bright, concealing light blue and red swimsuit and holding upright a cream surfboard by the calm beach. The top of the photograph has the bold word “Cronulla” and near the bottom of the page in small white lettering is the phrase; “Jewel of the Shire”. Cronulla is the name given to the beach in New South Wales where this photograph has been taken which suggests that Zuhalka was trying to address Australia’s beach culture. For Australians, going down to the beach in summer and surfing is a big part of our culture, yet it is interesting that Zuhalka has chosen a subject matter who is obviously not “Australian”. The viewer is automatically intrigued by the subject matter, as it would appear uncommon to see a Muslim women wearing an Islamic bathing suit and holding a surfboard on one of our beaches. Therefore, Zuhalka is successful in making us acknowledge the stereotypes we have of what it is to be Australian and suggests that maybe these expectations and beliefs are wrong and do not apply to today’s multicultural society. As migration to Australia continues to grow, we are exposed to different cultures, nationalities, religions and beliefs and because of this, many beliefs on issues such as gender, ethnicity, sexuality and lifestyle in general have changed. I think that Zuhalka was trying to present a different view and idea of what it is to be Australian. Maybe she is suggesting that it doesn’t matter where you grew up or what your family history is and that you can still be Australian. Maybe she is suggesting that our view of the typical Australian; blond hair, blues eyes, white skin and bikini body is unrealistic, racist and should not be accepted in the 21st Century.

The photograph by Anne Zuhulka depicts a Muslim women in a fully clothed swimsuit clutching a surfboard with the appropriate backdrop of a beach. The shot is reminiscent of an old advertisement, the type presented emphasises this feature. The type also provide more evidence to the women's background as it comes off as Arabic despite being in English which could have a deeper meaning depending on how you look at it.. Zuhulka was influenced by old pub advertisements that idealised Australian sport and it's people, specifically the popular beach sport of surfing. The artwork is a statement to the change in Australian culture in regards to gender and ethnicity and as a contrast to past stereotypes of ethnic women and how they have changed over time in our culture. This work helps define the kind of people that live in Australia. I believe it's the artist's intention to provide a stark contrast to the blonde haired shirtless surfer dude that has been has previously defined this nation and points out the multicultural society that is Australia by having a Muslim women partake in one of the country's most iconic sports. In regards for the type, while the detail may be small with no original intention, the fact that it's an Arabic type with English words suggest that while people may come from different backgrounds that have their own language most children brought up in other countries probably don't know their native language.

Anne Zuhulka artwork “Cronulla” Jewl of the Shire made in 2009-2011, a photograph of a woman which appears to be covered from head to toe with a full body focusing around an idea of her being Muslim wearing a swimsuit which has a different nationality writing on it, also holding a surfboard on a beach. During the making of this artwork Anne Zuhulka would of thought about many different ideas which influenced in the making of this photograph, ideas such as cultural and stereotyping people. The purpose is for people to try and see how different religions can also do “Aussie” or the idealised Australian sport and leisure, also giving different religions none judgment that if they want to do that they can and we can’t stop them from making decisions they are human just like us. The cultural stereotyping of Australian is a big point in this photograph. Like the Aussie idealised Australian sport is in Cronulla a popular surfing spot as well in Australia. Also the represented ideas that have occurred in gender, ethnicity, sexuality and lifestyle which are occurring during this photo. To me this photo has been taken to summarise different areas of how different lifestyles need to be respected and not judged, and how different religions should be able to do different hobbies and be happy. The woman in the photo looks as though she is Muslim or a different race, she doesn’t look that happy. The emotion she is portraying is showing how stereotyping people as a culture and religion shouldn’t be happening and it is hurting people, this is shown through this photograph by Anne Zahalka.

The Artwork by Anne Zuhulka uses the elements and principles of colour, foreground, background, line and shape to depict the image of a women standing by a surfboard on the shore of a beach. The art displays a lot of culture as the women in the image is dressed to only display her face and the writing on the surfboard and photograph are in cultural text.
I believe the artist has done this to try to break the barriers of stereotypes among the community and how society views people of that culture to act and behave.
The stereotypes and hows society views people of this culture is what has influenced the artist to produce this work and maybe try to break those barriers.
Anne Zuhulka creates an image where cultural identity is against a landscape marked by the memory of violence and intolerance.

The girl, the text on her clothing and the text on the image all are representations of a foreign culture. The girl’s clothing represents a specific religion and this may be part of the meaning of the piece. Overall I find the image hard to interpret.

The woman is probably wearing the full body swimsuit because she is Muslim and chooses to cover up and be modest. The woman’s religion would have influenced this work by her swimsuit. In many Islamic countries, women are not allowed to participate in sports and other activities, this makes the artwork culturally relevant by showing a Muslim woman doing something that may be against religious or political beliefs, it also may be an act of rebellion.

She is barefoot and looks quite serious and pensive. On the image there are three portions of text: “Cronulla”, “Jewel of the shire” and another unknown form of writing that is displayed on the swimsuit. Anne Zahulka appears to be defying the common stereotype of Islamic women not being permitted to participate in “guy” activities such as surfing. By having a female Muslim surfer as the center for her photograph we can assume that she is trying to challenge society’s view on what the common surfer should look like. It is presumed that this piece somewhat relates to the Islamic religion and also the culture of surfing.

She is at the beach, holding a surfboard and the letters on the swimsuit indicate that she is of middle eastern nationality. The artwork may be influenced by religion (religious traditions) and nationality. The image demonstrated culture due to physical appearance, linguistics involved in the image and the culture of youth involved with sports such as surfing. For many years women of specific middle eastern cultures cover their bodies with clothing showing historical as well as cultural relevance. Some Muslim females cover up due to religious reasons and are restricted with things they can and cannot do whilst males do not have to cover themselves to the same extent and have less restrictions, this female that is about to go surfing demonstrates how women can do things they enjoy although their religious beliefs do restrain them.

This artwork created by Anne Zahalka is a central and balanced photograph, the figure is in the center of the piece and the women’s figure is the main focal point of the piece. It is titled “Cronulla, Jewel of the Shire” and was produced between the years 2009 and 2011. In the foreground of this piece, a woman is standing in a full body swim suit holding a surf board and looking into the distance. She is wearing contrasting colours of blue and red. In the background, the sky is clear and the ocean is quite calm. Above the women, there is lettering that says “Cronulla” and also lettering below that says “Jewl of the shore” which is also the title of the piece. Zahalka’s work has been influenced by the concerns that she has of myths and culture and the effect they may or do have on societies views today. The purpose of this piece is to highlight the importance of women being treated equally, despite their cultural background and how they should not be denied the opportunity to pursue their passion or dreams. Religion is relevant to this artwork as this piece has Arabic writing displayed underneath the surfboard and also on the women’s shirt, this is significant because the artist also has this cultural background herself, and the way the artist has captured this woman shows that this is the main focal point of the piece.

Artist Anne Zahalka’s work depicts a women standing by the shore, dressed in a full body covering swimwear, which encompasses Arabic writing, while she is standing by a surfboard on the beach. The artist seems to be influenced by the Islamic culture hence the reference to the Arabic writing and her body covered. Zahalka’s work comments towards the typical cultural stereotypes and represents the shift that has occurred in gender, ethnicity, sexuality and lifestyle. She aims to demonstrate the idea of Muslim women, who often is shown to be conservative trying sports that aren’t typically associated with women but are mostly associated with men. She displays the meaning of a gender gap in the cultural. Through the demonstration of gender stereotypes in the artwork, Zahalka manages to display how Muslim women are frequently sexualized due to their ethnicity by categorizing them in norms that the society whishes to impose. Zahalka not only uses stereotypes to depict what is often associated with Muslim women but also who we as viewers interpret suffers, we as audience at times also sexualize people around us into typical norms. When viewing the image for the first time it was odd to view women as a surfer who is fully covered by her clothes. When thinking of a suffer a person habitually imagines a young male surfer who is fit, however is not always the case.
