My SDG inspired the message behind my piece, which could be interpreted the different ways depending on the context and how informed one is when looking at it.

I chose to transform the problem that SDG #11 Reduced Inequalities stemmed from. It's about minority groups from race, nationality, sexual orientation and more being ignored and disregarded in the developing economics of the world. While poverty gaps in developing countries are also rising, which subjects more people to the problems of poverty. I chose to emphasize this for my piece representing “instability” through other objects that do not very closely resemble this topic. This inspiration was largely from artist Shepard Fairey who created his pieces with the intention that each person has a different message that is interpreted from it depending on how informed they are in the context. I adapted this style by showing this “instability” through tension, and tension through the form of an anvil, tied to a rope that’s hanging off of a tipping beam on a structure. The rope is close to ripping and causing the anvil to fall, which is the reality of the situation for some people. They cannot support themselves with what they have (which is what SDG #11 stemmed from) and can succumb to falling at any moment.

While the structure that it is on, the framework of a building with other beams, shows stability and strong form. Contrary to the anvil that is to fall. This is even further contradicted with the billboards in the back showing rising stocks and growing economy.

All of the world’s infrastructure requires something to power them. Energy is a key part of human lives that is often overlooked because the people who have constant access to it takes it for granted. I chose SDG 7 because of this very reason. I focused on target 7.2 : Increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix (By 2030). This is because renewable energy has often been overshadowed by other issues. The lack of public demand and the costly prices have left little to no research on advancing clean and sustainable energy despite the fact it’s one of largest cause of climate change, wildlife destruction and air pollution.  My piece shows a wind turbine which represents clean energy as a brush while a smoke stack is dripping smoke that turns to ink and contaminates the painting. The negative space represents the blank state this industry is currently in and how it requires further development. The rainbow represents a brighter future that clean energy will be able to provide while the smoke stack represents fossil fuels and how at this point, they’re tainting the world. The wind turbine being further along and having more areas being rainbow rather than being contaminated is meant to give a sense of hope. At the same time, the puddle of ink is meant to indicate that this contamination is spreading, giving the viewer a sense of dread and urgency.

I personally love reading world news, issues that effect people around the globe. After reading about the Rohingya refugee crisis, it shocked me to see how many people were being displaced each day. Other issues like the South Sudan refugee crisis also shocked me after I did some extensive research. Both these issues inspired me to raise awareness about the horrific actions that are going on in our world. For music, we were tasked with making a composition. My partner and I wanted the composition to narrate a story, a story that explained the journey of a refugee, from their escape of a war torn country, to finally a place where it is safe. Our composition is split into different sections in which each section portrayed a different mood.

This art piece is was made to show that religious discrimination is still occurring in the world today. It was influenced by SDG Goal #10, Reduced Inequalities. I read a lot about Christianity in Pakistan and also the Rohingya refugee crisis which were both shocking to me. Even though this art is of a rosary, a form of devotion for Catholics, I wanted to show that every religion faces discrimination, hence the different newspaper articles in the background. I used darker and slightly duller, paler, and less vibrant colours in the piece to reflect the darkness of these situations. Not everyone is religious which is why it can be harder to understand, but attacks, bombings and mass genocides have all occurred based on religion.

The SDG of responsible consumption inspired me to make an art piece which would communicate the importance of mindful waste production and disposal. I chose this goal because it is especially relevant during the Coronavirus emergency. This is a time when, often unconsciously, people’s waste has increased (in fact, the amount of plastic waste generated in Bangkok has surged by 15% since the virus). Due to excessive stocking up, the purchase of highly processed foods and an increase in the use of disposable products (a few examples of which are masks and gloves), waste production is now more than ever a relevant issue. Furthermore, although it is an issue which everyone interacts with daily and has a chance to impact, it is often undermined, and people don’t realize it’s far-reaching consequences. After research into the impacts of irresponsible consumption and waste, I found that it impacts the world both environmentally and socially. I wanted to show all these impacts in my art piece by creating an artwork which would communicate the consequences of waste and encourage the audience to take action. A collage seemed to be the most efficient way to do this, since it enabled me to communicate a large range of ideas through photos. I started by connecting with the audience by showing pictures of the most “common” ways in which we interact with waste, such as food waste, using disposable products, littering, etc. As I continued with my collage, I started showing more of the “unseen” ways in which our waste impacts the world, such as pollution and garbage dumps and eventually showing images of hunger and poverty. By showing the impact of waste and the many forms it can take, I connected my art piece to the ideas of the production and consumption cycles, and I formed a connection between the audience’s daily actions to the need for social change in the way waste is handled. By writing “DON’T WASTE” out of household waste materials, I wanted to call to action my audience, and encourage them to change their approach to consumption in order to become more responsible consumers.

We wanted the setting of this piece to be a farm because farmlands are places in which droughts create famines, as lack of rainfall causes a lack of crops to be harvested. We also put a large number of sounds relating to the livestock on the farm because livestock is just as affected by drought as humans are.  We made our piece resemble a drought because even though it is not the sole cause of famine and lack of food, it is a very important one to put awareness on as droughts are directly related to changing patterns in the climate.

In human history, many civilizations and societies died off due to droughts, famines, and changing climates. One important example of this is the Harappan Civilization, it was one of the largest civilizations of its time (1,052 cities and a population of 5 million people) and it died off due to the drying of the Indus and lack of food. 

Unfortunately, changes in the climate today is happening at a faster rate than ever before, with a temperature increase of 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade. The rate of increase in temperatures is causing the ice sheets in the poles to receed at a rate of 146 gigatonnes per year in Antarctica ever since 2002 and at a rate of 281 gigatonnes per year in Greenland. The recession and expansion of ice sheets are significant in world history and the history of availability of food because, throughout the period between 7 million and 10000 years ago, the expansion and recession of ice sheets in the poles caused the Sahara desert to turn from a rich grassland to the driest desert in the world, with an annual rainfall of 0.04 inches. 

Most of the metaphors created in this piece are presented through polyphonic layers. There are only rare instances when one instrument is playing at a time. We have metaphors of people moving on the farm, of people tilling the land, of the bullock cart plowing the soil, and of most importantly water. All of these metaphors are played together because we wanted to create interconnectedness between the metaphors and to convey that just in real life as well, these metaphors cannot exist without the presence of the other. Our plan was that this piece should be played from any group with basic knowledge of how long notes are and we made the tempo such that people do not need a metronome to play this piece correctly. The tempo is 60 beats per minute, and they can play at the correct tempo by looking at an analog watch or clock. We would need at least 10 people to play this piece, as there are 10 instruments played in this piece.

My final IDU artwork is based on the UN sustainable development goal #14 “Life below water”. Looking at the painting itself, the audience can interpret the painting in different ways. Having looked at different websites, I was astonished by how many dolphins were the result of by-catches from commercial fishing. According to the World Wildlife Fund, “entanglement in fishing gear is the leading threat for whales and dolphins around the globe. It is estimated to cause at least 300,000 deaths per year.” The problem that dolphins and other species of fish are almost at the level of extinction made me decide to create a painting that conveys the message of the excessive number of overfished stocks globally and the damage that is done towards the marine ecosystem, specifically to dolphins. The dead fish and fishbone that are piling up is a representative of the immoderate of fish that is being pulled out of the ocean. To enhance the message, fishing rods are hanging in the background without anything on the hook which shows that in the future if humans doesn’t not stop this behavior, there will be no fish left in the ocean. Furthermore, the most important part of this painting is the blood that is coming out from the fin, symbolizing the destruction and suffering that humans have done to marine animals. Overall, I am very impressed and proud of how it turned out.

Since we know that this is a huge problem not only for the ecosystem but also for us in the future and we feel like the people living in the future are the only ones that can actually help and possibly save this problem from making a massive distinction or change. And therefore in the composition, we wanted to make it seem like there are fish swimming as if they were fine but as you progress with the song it gets darker and scarier. We did this to put a message to the audience this problem isn't fine and it could make an even bigger problem.

We tried to rearrange the piece so that it reflects the build up of courage by creating a call and response. We also utilized body percussion as a metaphor for gunshots.

We felt that the biodiversity of coral reefs was truly something worth preserving, and were inspired by minimalist music styles whilst composing. Our musical metaphor of diversity in reefs was mainly present in the percussion, as syncopation and complex rhythms were a great way to symbolize the intricacy of reef ecosystems. We had 4 separate movements in the piece, each approximately 14-16 bars long, and the marimba line switched between major (positive) and minor (negative) chords to show human impact on the systems.

This includes equal income growth, political inclusion of all, and equal opportunity for all. One  of the targets that it had was target 10.3, where it says, “Ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, including by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies and action in this regard”. This became the main target that I wanted to focus on with my art piece. I got inspired by this as I wanted a way to showcase how most groups of people are being oppressed and are unable to speak up. I also wanted to go across the fact that this world is  not just of a single group of people, but of all groups of people and that’s how I got my final piece idea. The art piece contains the Earth in the middle, in  the form of a jigsaw puzzle, and multiple hands going towards it with missing pieces. 5 of these hands are of the same skin tone while one of them will be of a different skin tone, indicating alienation. This hand will also be holding a puzzle piece but will be chained so that it appears to not be able to move.

As I'm in art, I chose to create a painting on canvas using acrylic paint. The piece is very explicit in its meaning and can be interpreted purely through the text. It is a parodied version of a coca cola advertisement poster, in which I altered the words to suit the idea and relation to the SDG, and the coca cola bottles into shopping bags in order to symbolize material wealth and consumerism. I chose the coca cola advertisement since I thought that the persuasive text almost matched with how wealth continues to grow on. The text talks more about the inequality aspect of the SDG and I chose the wording to almost cynically, look at how wealth is distributed which I found out through researching this goal and brainstorming ideas. I will admit, the quality and technique of the painting done aside which I'm not fond of, I do not really like this piece and the message it portrays. It is very vague and relies so much on context that the alleged message isn't very strong. Had I done this unit again, I would have chosen to use as a base, factual statistics rather than a concept as in my opinion, I'm better at it e.g. another idea I had of creating a sculpture that is based on graph of total income shared throughout the years showing various 'figures' navigating through it. That would not only taught the audience something factual, but also visually represented it in a meaningful way.

When thinking of inequality, I thought of people who were given unequal rights, and people who wanted to fight back. The composition tells a story of an equal rights movement trying to be heard by the public, and such story is told through a journey. At the start, there is one person that tries to create a movement to possibly end all of forms, inequality, however he is yet unsuccessful as the movement is too small to be influential enough. Then, over the span of the composition, it is able to build up to the climax, where the movement has finally been heard and recognized. We took violence and inequality into account, we rearranged the piece so that there was a clear ‘predator’ and a clear victim. The rearrangement was more generalized and not specified to one problem in Peace and Justice, this piece can be applied to the injustice of races, genders, violence against children and women, and many more. We used solos and a chorus to show the power in coming together as one rather than one person singing or ‘standing alone’. Peace and Justice are often drawn back to violence. Gun violence, for example, was showcased in our piece through the use of bass drums which added tension and surprise to the piece. This goal is quite a strong goal which is why we thought that we could be able to convey a lot of emotion through the use of dynamics and articulation. Especially seeing all of the injustice going on in this world, we thought about the song ‘resilience’ and realized that this could be used in more than just one context. While rearranging the piece we thought about how this could be used in a protest, fighting for justice. The message of it is non-violent civil disobedience, derived from several speeches and the previous events that have surfaced. By adding dynamic markings, articulation and other musical elements, we was able to convey the message of this goal better. By using percussion, stomps, we chose to symbol the gunshots (as of gun violence) and the coming together of different communities to form once, impactful voice. Through cannon, and layering in different voices, was an extended metaphor throughout the whole sing of joining forces and building courage. In addition to this, adding accents and crescendos/diminuendos, we emphasized on certain vital parts that emanated the feeling of resistance, unity and power (in whole).

The SDG that inspired my piece was peace and justice. Mainly, we focused on the violence used amongst more oppressed groups. Me and my partner strongly believed in the wrong of that which is why we chose this SDG goal. The SDG helped us bring ideas to the piece we created, using the song 'Resilience'. We took the idea of unity and transfered it into our piece using components such as dynamics and layering. When the piece progressed, the singers slowly join voices, forces. The idea of unity the piece brings will be a big solution for this SDG goal. If we learn to have a sense of unity no matter our difference, we can decrease or get rid of acts of violence amongst the oppressed all together. That is the change we feel we most need as of right now. No problem can be solved without peace and justice and basic human rights for all.

As we face many inequality problems everyday, SDG number 10 had a large range of discrimination problems, such as, race, culture, religion, income, disability, gender, etc. all these discrimination are a major problem, but I focused on racism problems.I was learning about Martin Luther King and Gandhi in I&S when I started my IDU work. I learned about the race inequality and the conflict between two different cultures(Muslim and Hindu) that happened. I already knew that inequality is a major problem that happens in many places, but the learning in I&S helped me to raise awareness and to become interested in my SDG. The purpose of my art work was to tell people that we should , and we can live in harmony. “Discrimination is a disease.” This was said by Roger Staubach. Like this saying, discrimination is something that we have to get rid of.
