the mountain nowadays is part of the united states. the capital is helena. The name Montana probably derives from the Spanish word montaña which means mountain, in fact the western third of the State contains numerous mountain ranges, but in Montana there are also smaller mountain ranges, for a total of 77 chains that are part of the Rockies. Montana has several nicknames, none of them official, including Big Sky Country, the Treasure State, and slogans that include Land of the Shining Mountains. ) and, more recently, The Last Best Place. With an area of 376.978 km², the State of Montana is the fourth largest in the United States (immediately after Alaska, Texas and California). In the far north, Montana shares with Canada 877 km of a border that is part of the longest defenseless border in the world. The borders of the state are, to be exact, with the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. To the east the Montana borders North Dakota and for a short distance with South Dakota, to the south with Wyoming and to the west and south-west with Idaho. While the white inhabitants began to populate Montana between the fifties and seventies of the nineteenth century, disputes began with Native Americans, mainly on land ownership and control. In 1855, Washington's Governor Isaac Stevens negotiated the Hellgate treaty between the US Government and the Salish peoples, the Pend d'Oreille and the Kootenai of Western Montana, which established borders for tribal nations. The treaty was ratified in 1859.
While the treaty instituted what later became the Flathead Indian Reservation, the problems of interpretation and the confusion over the terms of the treaty led the whites to believe that the Bitterroot Valley was open to settlements, but the tribal nations challenged these measures. The Salish remained in the Bitterroot Valley until 1891.
The first US Army settlement in Montana was at Camp Cooke, on the Missouri River in 1866, to protect boat traffic to Fort Benton, also in Montana. In the state were then established more than a dozen military garrisons. Pressure on land ownership and control increased due to gold discoveries in different parts of Montana and surrounding states. The greatest battles during the Red Cloud war took place in Montana: the 1876 Black Hills war, the Nez Perce war and the Blackfoot conflicts. Among the notable episodes there was the massacre of Marias (1870), the battle of the Little Bighorn (1876), the battle of the Big Hole (1877), and the battle of Bear Paw (1877). The last conflict recorded in Montana between the United States Army and the Native Americans occurred in 1887 during the war of Crow, in the Big Horn nation. The surviving Indians who had signed the treaties were asked to move to the reserves.

Commander Joseph and Colonel John Gibbon met again at the site of the Battle of the Big Hole in 1889.
Simultaneously with these conflicts, bison, an essential species and the primary food source of native peoples for centuries, was on the verge of extinction. Some estimates state that there were over 13 million bisons in Montana in 1870. In 1875, General Philip Henry Sheridan asked a joint session of the Congress to authorize the slaughter of herds to remove their food source from the Indians. [16] In 1884 the commercial hunting had brought the bison to the brink of extinction; only 325 bison had survived in the entire United States.
