In this quote Johnathan Edwards, the author, is trying to establish a sense of doom in his words and the way he phrases them. This is so that more people feel like they need to keep coming to the church. By saying things like the people deserved doomed to the Fiery pits, he is trying to instill the image of Fire which could be a symbol for pain and suffering because we all know what it is like to be burned. This quote probably made Edwards' audience feel scared and or pressured to stay with the Church and to follow their rules.

In this quote, Jonathan Edwards is explaining how your fate after death comes down to God. The decision on whether or not you will be reborn, to a state of new without sin, will all come down to the decision of a God that they have angered. He tries to explain that due to their sins and disbelief in the one and only God, they will never be reborn into new creatures, never being able to see the world again.

Here Edwards is once again trying to scare his listeners and or audience in staying with the church or engaging more in the church. His tone is yet again, kind of a angry or irritated tone. In this quote he describes how the devil is waiting and the fires of hell are excited to get a hold onto another person and that god wouldn't save the sinner. As a reader who this sermon wasnt even directed at in the first place, this is a scary enough quote because back then one of the things people cared about most was religion and how they stood in respect to going to heaven or not and to be told they were destined for the fire that would fain to get a hold of them was shocking and is probably why Edwards struggled with authority.
