Taylor is caring for Lou Ann when she feels down about her looks. Lou Ann is self-conscious because she has noticed how men treat her in public based on her looks. Taylor understands her but wants her to be confident and proud. Taylor is empowering Lou Ann.

2.  Lou Ann does not relate to many people in Tucson because she is from Pittman. She feels a connection since they are both from the same city. 

3. At the beginning of the book, Turtle could not bond with people, but since meeting Taylor, Lou Ann, and others, she knows she is part of a family. Taylor wanted her to feel a sense of community because she never did when she was little. Lou realize's that men judge woman based on their looks and are treating her differently. She feels like it would not be bad living life pregnant because men would no longer bother her. However, since men are judging Lou Ann, she starts to get self-conscious.

2. Taylor is empowered by Matties work because she had never seen women doing work like that before. She realizes the way her possibilities in life were limited in Pittman because of her gender. In this way, Mattie is a great model for Taylor because she shows her what is possible.

3. Jolene's dad treated her horribly and Jolene felt pressured to get marry, and she just ended up with Newt.
